SPOKANE, Wash. – The 2012 Red Lion Cascade/Frontier Challenge ended for Corban's men's basketball team, as the Warriors dropped its second straight game falling 68-57 to nationally-ranked Montana Western Saturday on the campus of Spokane Falls Community College.
With today's result, Corban falls to 1-2 on the season and Montana Western improves to 6-2 overall.
Junior
Jordan Carter, who appeared in his second game of the season following an appendicitis, led all scorers with a game-high 22 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the field that included a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line. Along with Carter, senior
Jacob Kopra and junior
Josiah Sebens also scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. On the boards, Sebens grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go along with a game-high tying four-assist effort by senior
Dustin Moore.
Corban would open the game scoring the first 12 points en route to 12-0 lead with 17:05 on the clock thanks to a three-pointer by Carter. Over the next 11 minutes, Montana Western would use a 21-9 run to tie the score at 21-21 on a fast break three-pointer by Maazin Butler with 6:08 left in the first half. Both teams would trade baskets over the next 90 seconds before Montana Western broke a 26-26 tie with a 7-0 run that resulted in a 33-26 advantage on a jumper in the paint by Tyler Miller with just over two minutes on the clock. Corban would close out the opening half by scoring the final five points en route to pulling within two points (33-31) at halftime thanks to a three-pointer by Kopra for the final points of the first twenty minutes of play.
The second half would begin with Corban tying the score at 33-all before the two teams traded leads over a span of five minutes, as the Warriors took the lead at 43-41 following four straight free throws by Kopra and Carter. Corban would continue to hold the lead until the 12:24 mark when Montana Western took the lead at 47-46 thanks to a fast break lay-in by Kris Collins. The Warriors would continue to fight back before taking the lead (53-51) thanks to an old-fashion three-point play by Sebens with 8:11 left. Unfortunately that would be the last time that Corban would hold the lead, as Montana Western used an 11-0 run over a span of five-plus minutes to earn a nine-point lead (62-53) on a jumper in the paint by Miller with just over three minute remaining. The ranked Bulldogs would push their lead to a game-high 13 points (68-55) before settling for the 11-point win (68-57).
Butler would lead Montana Western with 20 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field that included a 4-for-7 showing from beyond the three-point line and a 6-for-7 performance at the free throw line, while Jake Owsley was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. UMW's Kris Castro handed out a game-high tying four assists, while Owsley blocked a game-high three shots.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 18-for-56 (32.1%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-24 (292.2%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a perfect 14-for-14 at the free throw line. On the other hand, Montana Western was 23-for-53 (43.4%) from the field, 7-for-20 (35.0%) from long distance, and 15-for-20 (75.0%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will take a 13-day break before returning to action on Friday, November 23rd, in the fourth and final game on the opening day of the Capital City Classic against cross town rival Willamette beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
