SPOKANE, Wash. – Corban's nationally-ranked women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday with a 56-49 victory over the Diggers of Montana Tech in the Warriors' final game of the 2012 Red Lion Cascade/Frontier Challenge on the campus of Spokane Falls Community College.

With today's result, Corban improves to 1-3 on the season and Montana Tech falls to 2-3 overall.

Sophomore Tara Vanweerdhuizen would register a double-double with a game-high 17 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots, while freshman Julia Young and senior Emily Tsugawa added nine and eight points, respectively. On the boards, Vanweerdhuizen was aided by fellow sophomores Danielle Vanderstoel and Katherine Salness with five rebounds each to go along with game-high tying three assists apiece by Tsugawa and Young.

Corban would begin the game by scoring the opening five points thanks to a three-pointer and jumper in the paint by Young before Montana Tech used a 7-2 run over a span of three-plus minutes to tie the game at 7-7 with 13:53 on the clock. Over the next 10 minutes, neither team would hold more than a three-point lead until Corban used an 11-7 run en route to earning a five-point lead (26-21) on a Vanweerdhuizen free throw with 13 seconds left. Montana Tech would score the final point of the first half via a free throw, as Corban took a four-point lead (26-22) into halftime.

Over the opening 10 minutes of the second half, Corban would use a 25-8 run en route to securing its largest lead of the game (51-30) on a fast break jumper in the paint by Tsugawa. Montana Tech would step up the defense holding Corban without a point over a nine-minute stretch that allowed the Diggers to pull within four points (51-47). The Warriors would snap their scoreless drought via a pair of free throws by Young that resulted in a six-point advantage (53-47). Montana Tech would get only two more free throws from Laini Kalumbi, as Corban's free throw shooting and the clock would be the enemy of the Diggers resulting in a seven-point (56-49) victory for the Warriors.

Montana Tech's Kelsey DeWit led the Diggers in scoring with 16 points and a game-high tying 11 rebounds, while Ivana Lacmanovic and two other MTT players – Kalumbi and Brynne Kambich – added seven, six, and six points, respectively. Kalumbi and Erika Jenkins aided DeWit on the boards with six rebounds each, while Lisa Laslovich handed out a game-high tying three assists for the Diggers.
