PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore Tara Vanweerdhuizen and freshman
Jade Lowery scored 18 points each, as Corban's women's basketball team picked up a 74-60 victory over cross town rival Willamette Saturday in the opening game of the Bon Appetit Tournament inside the Pamplin Sports Center.
Today's victory pushes the Warriors' winning streak to two games, as Corban improves to 2-3 on the season. Meanwhile, Willamette remains winless this year at 0-2.
The aforementioned duo of Vanweerdhuizen and Lowery combined to shoot 17-for-30 from the field, as Vanweerdhuizen was 9-for-16 from the field also adding a game-high tying eight rebounds and a game-high five blocks. Lowery, who poured in a career-high in points today against the Bearcats, was 8-for-14 from the field and also registered a game-high four steals. Senior
Emily Tsugawa would add nine points and a game-high five assists, while freshman
Julia Young chipped in with nine points also.
Corban would jump out to a double-digit lead (14-4) in the opening six minutes thanks to a lay-in by sophomore
Danielle Vanderstoel, as the Warriors increased their lead to 20 points (28-8) on a jumper by junior
Alison Evans with 8:25 on the clock. For the remainder of the first half, Corban would hold a double-digit lead with Willamette pulling within 12 points (32-20) with 4:41 left before the Warriors settled for a 17-point advantage (42-25) at halftime.
In the opening nine-plus minutes of the second half, Corban would continue to apply the offensive pressue until the Warriors held a game-high 22-point lead (60-38) thanks to a jumper by senior
Tess Bennett with 11:21 on the clock. Over the final 11-plus minutes, Willamette would use a closing 22-14 run to pull within the final margin of 14 points (74-60).
Willamette's Mackenzie Lamson led the Bearcats with a game-high tying 18 points, while Sophie Wilson was the only other Willamette player in double figures with 16 points. On the boards, Ali Babij grabbed a game-high tying eight rebounds to go along with a team-high four assists by Jojo DeLong.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 33-for-69 (47.8%) from the field that included a 50.0% (18-for-36) showing in the first half. The Warriors were also 4-of-8 (50.0%) from beyond the three-point line and 4-of-6 (66.7%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Willamette was 24-for-54 (44.4%) from the field, 6-for-10 (60.0%) from long distance, and 6-for-10 (60.0%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to action tomorrow – Sunday, November 18th – in the finale of the Bon Appetit Tournament against tournament-host and the NCAA Division III's No. 11-ranked Lewis & Clark beginning at 3:00 p.m. inside the Pamplin Sports Center in Portland.
