Warriors Fall in Finals to Wolves of Western Oregon

SALEM, Ore. – Despite four Warriors scoring in double figures led by senior Jacob Kopra with 17 points, Corban's men's basketball team fell in the championship game of the Capital City Classic, 74-61, to the Wolves of Western Oregon Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

With tonight's result, Corban drops to 2-3 overall and Western Oregon improves to 4-2 on the season.

Along with Kopra's team-high scoring performance, three other Warriors – senior Marcus Butler, junior Josiah Sebens, and junior Jordan Carter – scored in double figures with 16, 12, and 10 points, respectively. Kopra also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, while Butler and Sebens added eight boards apiece. Freshman Andrew Evans would lead Corban with five assists, while Butler registered a game-high tying two steals en route to being named as part of the all-tournament team.

After Corban took a slim two-point lead (6-4) on a jumper by Butler with 16:57 on the clock, Western Oregon used a 12-3 run over a span of six minutes to earn a nine-point advantage (18-9) on a Rodney Webster lay-in with just over 10 minutes left. An 11-2 run by Corban would knot the game at 20-20 before the visiting Wolves used a 9-0 run of their own to pull ahead by nine points (29-20) on a three-pointer by Andy Avgi with 4:31 on the clock. Corban would get back within a single point (29-28) on a fast break lay-in by Butler before Western Oregon scored the final four points en route to taking a five-point lead (33-28) into halftime.

The second half would begin with Western Oregon scoring 11 of the first 14 points en route to earning a 13-point cushion (44-31) on a lay-in by Avgi with 17:10 remaining. Corban would get back within one point (44-43) thanks to a 12-0 run that concluded with a fast break lay-in by Kopra before Western Oregon used a 14-1 run of its own to pull back in front by 12 points (57-45) on a Drew Johnson three-pointer with 9:56 left in the game. The host Warriors would get as close as six points (63-57) on a jumper in the paint by senior Dustin Moore before Western Oregon settled for the 13-point win (74-61).

Avgi led all players with a game-high 24 points for Western Oregon, while Wiley and Webster added 17 and 13 points, respectively. Avgi also grabbed a team-high six rebounds, while Johnson handed out a game-high six assists for the Wolves. Along with Avgi's MVP performance over this weekend's two games, Wiley was also named as part of the all-tournament team.

As a team, Corban combined to shoot 22-for-60 (36.7%) from the field that included a 10-for-28 (35.7%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 7-for-9 (77.8%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Western Oregon was a combined 28-for-61 (45.9%) from the field, 9-for-28 (32.1%) from long distance, and 9-for-14 (64.3%) at the charity stripe.

Corban will return to the hardwood on Friday, November 30th, in the Warriors' Cascade Collegiate Conference opener against No. 2-ranked Oregon Tech beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
