Sophomore Katherine Salness poured in a team and career-high 14 points Saturday, as Corban fell in the championship game of the Capital City Classic to the visiting Wolves of Western Oregon in Salem.

Warriors Claim Runner-Up Spot at Capital City Classic

SALEM, Ore. – Three Warriors scored in double figures led by sophomore Katherine Salness's career-high 14 points, as Corban's women's basketball team took home the runner-up trophy at the Capital City Classic with a 75-66 loss at the hands of NCAA Division II member Western Oregon Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 3-5 overall and Western Oregon improves to 4-2 on the season.

Along with Salness's career-high performance off the bench, senior Emily Tsugawa and sophomore Tara Vanweerdhuizen added 13 and 12 points, respectively, to go along with a game-high 16 rebounds by Vanweerdhuizen. Salness would also dish out a team-high five assists, while Tsugawa registered a team-high four steals. Both Tsugawa and Vanweerdhuizen would be named as part of the all-tournament team following their performances over the two-day event.

In the opening five-plus minutes of the game, Western Oregon quickly jumped out to a double-digit lead (15-5) before the visiting Wolves extended their lead to as much as 21 points (31-10) on a Katie Goddard lay-in with 8:58 on the clock. Corban would get as close as 17 points on three seperate occasions with the final one happening on a pair of Tsugawa free throws with 4:08 remaining that made the score 38-21 in favor of Western Oregon. The visiting Wolves would settle for a 14-point lead (42-28) at halftime, as junior Alison Evans knocked down two free throws with 1.8 seconds on the clock for the final points of the opening twenty minutes of play.

The second half would begin with Corban beginning to cut into Western Oregon's lead, as the host Warriors got within six points (51-45) on back-to-back free throws by Tsugawa with 11:23 left in the game. Unfortunately that would be as close as Corban would get, as Western Oregon used a 19-12 run to pull ahead by 13 points (70-57) with just under two minutes left on two free throws by Dana Goularte. Corban would outscore the Wolves over the final two minutes cutting the final deficit to nine points (75-66), but it was not enough as Western Oregon took home the tournament title withe 75-66 win.

Western Oregon's Mariah Durian led all players with a game-high 21 points, while three other Wolves – Goularte, Goddard, and Lorrie Clifford – also scored in double figures with 14, 11, and 11 points, respectively. Goularte and Clifford both registered double-doubles with a game-high 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively, while Goularte also handed out a game-high six assists to go along with a game-high five steals en route to being named tournament MVP. Along with Goularte, Clifford was also named as part of the all-tournament team for the Wolves.

As a team, Corban combined to shoot 23-for-70 (32.9%) from the field that included a 4-for-16 (25.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 16-for-28 (57.1%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Western Oregon was a combined 25-for-63 (39.7%) from the field, 4-for-13 (30.8%) from long distance, and 21-for-30 (70.0%) at the charity stripe.

Corban will return to action on Friday, November 30th, in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for the Warriors against the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
