SPOKANE, Wash. – In the opening game of the 2012 Red Lion Cascade/Frontier Challenge, Corban's women's basketball team had three players score in double figures led by freshman
Julia Young with 12 points in the Warriors' 62-56 loss to Great Falls Friday at Spokane Falls Community College.
With today's result, Corban remains winless this season falling to 0-3 and Great Falls improves to 3-2 on the season.
Young would score all her points in the first half, as she knocked down two three-pointers. Meanwhile, sophomores
Haley Holboke and Tara Vanweerdhuizen added 10 points each to go along with a six-point, eight-rebound showing by fellow sophomore
Danielle Vanderstoel. Senior
Emily Tsugawa also added six points to go along with a team-high three assists, while senior
Tess Bennett made her season debut scoring four points.
Corban would open the game by scoring six of the first 10 points before Great Falls used a 9-0 run en route to capturing a seven-point lead (13-6) on a jumper in the paint by Mary Wilmore with 13 minutes on the clock. Over the next minute, Corban would score six unanswered points to pull within a single point (13-12) thanks to a three-pointer by Young with 12:01 left. Over the next 10 minutes, neither team would secure more than a three-point lead with Corban earning its first lead since the 16:33 mark thanks to a fast break bucket by Young that put the Warriors up 25-23 with just over three minutes left in the opening half. Both teams would fight tooth-and-nail over the final three minutes with Tsugawa hitting the final basket via a bucket in the paint that tied the score 33-all heading into halftime.
The second half would see Corban score the opening four points on back-to-back baskets by Holboke with the final one coming at the 16:57 mark giving the Warriors a 37-33 lead. Great Falls would battle back with five unanswered points taking a one-point lead (38-37) before Corban got a two-point by Vanweerdhuizen and a free throw from freshman
Jade Lowery to take its final lead of the game (40-38) with just over 15 minutes left. Great Falls would use a 7-0 run over a span of four minutes to earn a five-point advantage (45-40) before the Lady Argos increased their lead to eight points (51-43) on a pair of free throws by Sydnee Burke with just under eight minutes left. Corban would get as close as four points (59-55) thanks to back-to-back free throws by Bennett, but UGF's free throw shooting down the stretch would seal the Warriors' fate by the final margin of six points (62-56).
Great Falls was led by Lindsey Abramson with game-high totals of 15 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists, while Erin Legel and Wilmore added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 19-for-63 (30.2%) from the field to go along with a 3-for-16 (18.8%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 15-for-23 (65.2%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Great Falls was 16-for-55 (29.1%) from the field, 4-for-11 (36.4%) from long distance, and 26-for-32 (81.3%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the hardwood tomorrow – Saturday, November 10th – in its final game of the Red Lion Cascade/Frontier Challenge against Montana Tech beginning at approximately 12:00 p.m. on the campus of Spokane Falls Community College in Spokane, Washington.
