SALEM, Ore. – Despite a career-high 26 points by senior
Dustin Moore, Corban's men's basketball fell victim to a buzzer-beating three-pointer that forced overtime before George Fox made 14-of-19 free throws in the extra frame en route to an 89-82 win Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Tonight's results drops Corban to 2-6 overall, while George Fox improves to 4-3 with its second straight come-from-behind win over a Cascade Collegiate Conference opponent this week.
Along with Moore's offensive performance, fellow senior
Marcus Butler added 11 points to go along with a pair of nine-point efforts by senior
Jacob Kopra and junior
Josiah Sebens. Sebens would also pull down a team-high nine rebounds, while freshman
Andrew Evans handed out a game-high five assists to go along with two-steal performances by Moore and freshman
Taylor Fox.
Corban would begin the game by jumping out a quick 7-0 lead thanks to a three-pointer and lay-in by Moore before George Fox even got on the board at the 17:13 mark via a free throw by Anthony Sanchez. After Sanchez's free throw, George Fox would use a 16-11 run over a six-minute span to pull within two points (18-16) on a Spencer Bolte lay-in with 11:15 on the clock. Corban would methodically push its lead to double digits (38-24) thanks to a 20-8 run over an eight-minute span, as Kopra knocked down a three-pointer to close out the run with 2:42 left. The host Warriors would settle for an 11-point lead (40-29) at halftime following a buzzer-beating up-and-under lay-in by Kopra.
The second half would begin with George Fox scoring 10 of the first 14 points to pull within five points (44-39) following a three-pointer by A.J. Grant with 16:31 on the clock. Corban would push its lead to 12 points (67-55) on a lay-in by freshman
Cyrus Ward with just over six minutes left before the lid closed on the Warriors' basket. Over the next five minutes, Corban would not score another point with George Fox using an 11-0 run to get within a single point (67-66) on a free throw by Josh Garlington with just over a minute remaining. Evans would break the Warriors' scoring drought with a driving lay-in with 39 ticks showing on the clock before Sean Atkins hit a jumper in the paint 22 seconds later to pull George Fox within one point (69-68). On the play, Atkins was whistled for a foul after he releashed the shot putting Kopra at the free throw where he calmly hit a pair to put Corban up by three points (71-68). Following a timeout by head coach Justin Sherwood that set-up Corban's defense, George Fox took the ball down and unleashed a three-point attempt with just over one second remaining that would fall into the awaiting arms of Jon Adrian allowing the Bruins to call a timeout with 0.4 seconds left. After the break in play, George Fox set-up a perfectly executed sideline out-of-bounds play that got Sanchez open for a contested three-point attempt that hit nothing but net as its went through for a game-tying, buzzer-beating shot that sent the game into overtime knotted at 71-71.
In overtime, neither team would earn more than a two-point lead with Corban securing its final lead of the night (78-76) on back-to-back free throw by Butler with 2:33 on the clock. Over the next two-plus minutes, George Fox would score 10 unanswered points all at the free throw line until freshman
Kent Foster stop another scoreless drought for Corban with a driving lay-in with 19 seconds left. Three more George Fox free throws along with a lay-in by Moore in the final seconds would be the difference, as the visiting Bruins earned their second straight overtime victory inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center with an 89-82 win.
George Fox was led offensive by Sanchez with 23 points that included a 16-for-23 showing at the free throw line, while three other Bruins – Atkins, Garlington, and Bolte – also scored in double figures with 22, 12, and 10 points, respectively. Sanchez would also lead all players with a game-high 11 rebounds en route to registering the double-double to go along with a team-high four assists.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 32-for-67 (47.8%) from the field that included an 11-for-25 (44.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 7-for-12 (58.3%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, George Fox was 23-for-54 (42.6%) from the field, 6-of-20 (30.0%) from long distance, and 37-for-50 (74.0%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, December 8th – in a non-conference game against the visiting Keelhaulers of California Maritime Academy beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
