PORTLAND, Ore. – Corban's men's basketball team extended its season-high winning streak to five games with a 78-69 win over Concordia Friday inside Cavalier Gymnasium to move two games ahead of the Warriors' conference rival in the current Cascade Collegiate Conference standings.
Tonight's victory improved Corban's win-loss record to 16-11 overall and 8-7 in CCC games, while Concordia falls to 14-12 overall and 6-9 in league play.
Senior
Erik Cronrath led the Warriors with 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field, while senior
Jake Mauermann knocked down a game-high five three-pointers en route to scoring 15 points and junior
Jacob Kopra added 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field. Sophomore
Jordan Carter put together the best all-around game for the Warriors with eight points, a game-high tying seven rebounds, and a game-high eight assists. Kopra tied Carter for the team's rebounding lead with seven, while Mauermann registered a team-high two steals.
A 4-0 run by Concordia started the game before Corban used a 20-7 run over a span of six-plus minute span en route to securing a nine-point lead (20-11) on a Kopra three-pointer with 11:15 left. The visiting Warriors would extend their lead to double digits (28-18) on a free throws by junior
Marcus Butler at the 5:35 mark before Corban secured a 20-point lead (40-20) on a fast break lay-in by junior
Dustin Moore with 39 seconds on the clock. Concordia would cut the deficit to 18 points (40-22) at halftime after Corban hit 51.9% (14-of-27) from the field over the opening twenty minutes.
Corban would continue to hold a double-digit lead throughout the second half until the game's final minute, as the Warriors extended their lead to as much as 22 points (58-36) on a Kopra jumper in the paint with 12:52 left. Concordia would pull within nine points (76-67) on a Kevan West lay-in with exactly one minute remaining, but the Cavaliers would not get any closer as Corban settled for the nine-point win (78-69).
Concordia was led in scoring by Jourdan Sweeney with a game-high 26 points on 12-for-15 shooting from the field, while Drew Preuninger and West added 17 and 13 points, respectively. On the boards, West grabbed a game-high tying seven rebounds to go along with a team-high three assists by Anthony Holton.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 29-for-51 (56.9%) from the field that included a 62.5% (15-for-24) clip in the second half. The Warriors would also knock down 11-of-21 (52.4%) shots from beyond the three-point line, while also hitting 9-of-13 (69.2%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Concordia was 26-for-61 (42.6%) from the field, 4-for-12 (33.3%) from long distance, and 13-for-17 (76.5%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, February 11th – against the NAIA's No. 12-ranked Knights of Warner Pacific beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside C.C. Perry Gymnasium in Portland.
