Jordan Carter and senior
Erik Cronrath combined to score 55 points on 14-for-24 shooting from the field, as Corban's men's basketball team upset the nationally-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon, 91-78, Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
With tonight's win coupled with a loss by Concordia, Corban wraps up at least the No. 6-seed in next week's Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament improving to 17-12 overall and 9-8 in CCC games. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon falls into a two-way tie with the Warriors dropping its win-loss record to 16-13 overall and 9-8 in league action.
Carter would lead all players with a game and career-high 35 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field to go along with a 12-for-13 performance at the free throw line, while Cronrath added 20 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field and 10-for-12 at the free throw line. Along with aforementioned C&C duo, junior
Jacob Kopra also scored in double figures with 15 points. On the boards, Carter grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go along with a team-best tying five assists. Senior
James Green would lead the Warriors' reserves with seven points, while senior
Jake Mauermann and sophomore
Josiah Sebens aided the scoring output with five points each.
The game would begin with a see-saw battle that watched the contest start with a 5-5 tie over the opening three minutes until Corban used a 23-11 run to grab a 12-point advantage (30-16) on a jumper by Cronrath at the 8:33 mark. Despite Southern Oregon getting within nine points (37-28) with exactly five minutes remaining, the host Warriors continued to hold a double-digit lead pushing their advantage to as much as 16 points (48-32) following a buzzer-beating lay-in by Carter that ended the first half.
Southern Oregon would come out looking to quickly get back into the game in the second half, as the visiting Raiders used a 7-0 run over the opening three minutes to pull within seven points (48-41) thanks to a fast-break lay-in by Eric Thompson with 17:23 left. Not wanting to allow SOU back into the game, Corban used a 25-10 run over a span of 10 minutes to grab its largest lead of the game (73-49) on a lay-in by senior
Brelin Powell with 7:30 on the clock. Over the final five minutes, Southern Oregon began to use its long distance shooting to pull within single digits (87-78) before timely free throw shooting down the stretch by Corban sealed the deal for the Warriors (91-78).
Five SOU players would scored in double figures led by Kyle Tedder's team-high 18 points, while Thompson, Salem-native Taylor Roos, Terriel Thomas, and Jordan Highland added 11, 11, 11, and 10 points, respectively. Thomas would come off the Raider's bench to grab a game-high eight rebounds, while SOU reserve Joe White dished out a game-high six assists.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 26-for-47 (55.3%) from the field that included a scorching 17-for-25 (68.0%) over the opening twenty minutes. The Warriors were also 9-for-19 (47.4%) from beyond the three-point line and 30-for-35 (85.7%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was 26-for-66 (39.4%) from the field, 11-for-30 (36.7%) from long distance, and 15-for-19 (78.9%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, February 18th – when the Warriors host their first-ever No. 1-ranked opponent in the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. Prior to tip-off, Corban will honor six seniors, as they prepare to compete in their final home game of the regular season.
