SALEM, Ore. – For the fourth time in program history, Corban's women's basketball team will be playing for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament title following a 59-48 win over Warner Pacific in the semifinals Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
With the win, Corban pushes its winning streak to four games improving to 23-6 overall. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific has its season come to an end with a win-loss record of 20-11.
Senior
Shayla Fetters led the Warriors' offense with 18 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field and hit 8-of-9 shots at the free throw line, while junior
Emily Tsugawa chipped in with 17 points and a team-high three assists. Freshman Tara Vanweerdhuizen also scored in double figures with 10 points, while also pulling down a game-high tying 11 rebounds en route to recording her 15th double-double of the season.
After falling behind by eight points (11-3) earlier, Corban used an 18-3 run over a span of six-plus minutes en route to securing a seven-point lead (21-14) following a pair of free throws by Fetters with 5:53 left. The host Warriors would continue to apply the offensive pressure, as Corban increased its advantage to the largest of the first half (26-17) when Tsugawa knocked down a pair of free throws at the 3:10 mark. Over the final three-plus minutes, Warner Pacific began to show its offensive firepower thanks to a closing 10-2 run that pulled the visiting Knights to within a single point (28-27) at halftime thanks to two free throws by Chelsey Christensen for the final points of the opening twenty minutes.
The second half would begin with a patented Corban run, as the Warriors outscored Warner Pacific by eight points (19-11) over the opening 13-plus minutes to grab another nine-point lead (47-38) on a jumper by junior
Tess Bennett with 6:56 on the clock. Corban would quickly increase its lead to double digits (55-43) on a jumper by senior
Katie Steigleman at the 3:52 mark before the Warriors earned another 12-point cushion (57-45) on two more free throws by Fetters with 48 seconds left. Despite only hitting 3-of-11 free throws in the final minute, Corban was awarded with four offensive rebounds that kept Warner Pacific from cutting into the Warriors' lead. Tsugawa would close out the game's scoring with her fifth and final free throw on the night, as Corban held on for the 11-point win (59-48).
Warner Pacific was led offensively by Christensen's team-high 15 points and game-high tying 11 rebounds, while Layne Tucker also chipped in with 14 points off the Knights' bench. Nichole Jackson would handed out a game-high eight assists for Warner Pacific, while Katie Smith registered a game-high tying three steals.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 17-for-50 (34.0%) from the field to go along with a 4-for-16 (25.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 21-for-34 (61.8%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Warner Pacific was 15-for-64 (23.4%) from the field, 6-for-25 (24.0%) from long distance, and 12-for-18 (66.7%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will play its final game of the season inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem on Monday, February 27th, as the Warriors host the CCC Tournament Championship Game for the first time since the 2004-05 season. The NAIA's No. 10-ranked Corban will welcome No. 20-ranked The College of Idaho to Oregon's Capital City for a 7:00 p.m. contest, as the Warriors and Coyotes will meet for the second straight year in the postseason.
