BOX SCORE
SPOKANE, Wash. – The second day of the Red Lion Cascade/Frontier Challenge opened for Corban's women's volleyball team with a three-set loss falling to Montana State-Northern, 3-0 (22-25, 20-25, 15-25), Friday at the HUB Sports Center despite six kills each by junior
Olivia Shropshire and sophomore
Claire Bailey.
After fighting through a hard-fought, five-set heart breaker last night against Montana Tech, Corban returned to the court just over 15 hours later and fought hard over the opening two sets before watching the Skylights of MSU-Northern register 12 kills in the third and final set versus nine kills and nine hitting errors by the Warriors.
Along with Shropshire and Bailey's offensive performance, senior
Chandra Teague and freshman
Caitlin Marinos added five kills each to go along with a 15-assist performance by sophomore
Katherine Salness. Freshman libero
Hannah Flores led Corban's defensive efforts with a match-high 13 digs, while Shropshire added three blocks at the net.
The opening set would see Corban jump out to a six-point lead (8-2) before MSU-Northern used a 12-6 run to knot things at 14-all on a solo block by Kelsey Williams. Both teams would battle back and forth over the next eight combined points resulting in an 18-18 tie, but the Skylights would then use a quick 4-0 run to take advantage (22-18) on a Joni Nagy kill. Corban would battle back to within two points (24-22) on a Bailey kill, but MSU-Northern was too close to victory that a Williams kill would end the opening set with the Skylights capturing the three-point win (25-22).
Set #2 would be a back-and-forth battle over the opening 28 combined points until the set was knotted at 14-all on a kill by junior
Jenny Harman. Another run by MSU-Northern would give the Skylights a five-point lead (19-14) after a kill by Dayna Jensen that was too much for Corban to overcome. The Warriors would pull within two points (22-20) on another kill by Bailey only to have MSU-Northern close out the set with three straight points that included a combo block by Haley Russell and Abby Nicholas on set-point for the 25-20 victory.
The third and final set was a battle over the opening 12 combined points, as MSU-Northern tied things at 6-6 thanks to a kill by Victoria Polo that jumpstarted a 12-5 run that resulted in a seven-point Skylight lead (18-11). Corban would score four straight points thanks to a kill by Teague, back-to-back MSU-Northern hitting errors, and a service ace from junior
Karisa Legg that pulled the Warriors within three points (18-15) and caused a timeout by the Skylights' coaching staff. Following the break in action, MSU-Northern used a match-closing 7-0 run to secure the three-set victory (25-15) with the final six points coming on Nicholas' serve that included a match-ending service ace.
Williams would lead MSU-Northern's offensive attack with a match-high 10 kills, while Nagy and Nicholas added nine kills each. Nagy also handed out a match-high 24 assists to go along with nine digs, while Shayla Bly chipped in with 11 assists of her own. Holly Cartwright anchored the Skylights' defense with 10 digs, while Williams was a force at the net with a match-high tying three blocks.
Corban will continue play at the first-ever Red Lion Cascade/Frontier Challenge later today – Friday, August 24th – against No. 21-ranked Carroll College beginning at 6:00 p.m. inside the HUB Sports Center in Spokane, Washington.
