Warriors Fall in Three Sets to Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech

BOX SCORE

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – In its first road match since the beginning of September, Corban's women's volleyball team fell in three straight sets to the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech, 3-0 (24-26, 16-25, 12-25), Friday at Danny Miles Court.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 3-11 overall and 1-7 in Cascade Collegiate Conference matches. Meanwhile, Oregon Tech improves to 10-11 overall and 2-6 in league play.

Senior Chandra Teague lead the Warriors offensively with seven kills, while sophomore Courtney Mulford added six kills. Sophomore setter Katherine Salness handed out a team-high 19 assists, while freshman libero Hannah Flores anchored Corban's defense with a team-best 13 digs. At the net, four different Warriors – junior Jenny Harman, Salness, freshman Caitlin Marinos, and Mulford – each registered an assist block, while Teague served up a match-high two service aces.

The opening set would be a back-and-forth battle over the opening 16 combined points until Corban broke an 8-8 tie with an 8-0 run that was fueled by the serving of junior Karisa Legg en route to securing a 16-8 lead. During the run, Mulford would lead the Warriors with a pair of kills and an assist block. Unfortunately for Corban, Oregon Tech would claw its way back into the set thanks to a 15-7 run that knotted things at 23-23 on a combo block by Krista Galloway and Aurora Penoyar. OIT would earn its first set point on a kill by Kara Young making the score 24-23 before another Young kill would set up the Owls' final set-closing point at 25-24. A Corban hitting error would close out the opening set, as Oregon Tech earned the hard-fought 26-24 victory.

Set #2 would belong to Oregon Tech from the beginning, as the Owls quickly jumped out to an eight-point lead (10-2) on a Kristen Walters kill. Corban would get as close as four points (11-7) on a Flores ace before Oregon Tech used a 4-0 run that resulted in a 15-7 lead that the host Owls would ride to a 25-16 victory on another Walters kill.

In the third and final set, Oregon Tech scored 10 of the first 11 points en route to building a nine-point lead (10-1) on a combo block by Penoyar and Jen Saltenberger. The host Owls push their lead to 13 points (22-9) before Corban broke into the double digits scoring-wise on a kill by Mulford. Unfortunately, OIT's lead was too large as the Owls cruised to a 13-point victory (25-12) taking the match in a three-set sweep.

Young would lead all players with a match-high 13 kills for Oregon Tech, while Walters and Penoyar added eight and six kills, respectively. Kayleigh Whelchel handed out a match-high 23 assists for the Hustlin' Owls, while Marie Baumann anchored OIT's defense with a match-high 16 digs. Penoyar and Saltenberger controlled the net with a match-high five blocks each, while five different Owls served an ace in the victory.

Corban will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, September 29th – against nationally-ranked Southern Oregon beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside Bob Riehm Arena in Ashland.
