Starting Five Scores in Double Figures in Loss to Concordia

PORTLAND, Ore. – All five starters scored in double figures led by senior Emily Tsugawa's team-high 21 points, but it was not enough as Corban's women's basketball team fell to the Cavaliers of Concordia, 85-79, Saturday inside Cavalier Gymnasium.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 4-15 overall and 1-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 7-11 overall and 2-7 in CCC games.

Along with Tsugawa's scoring performance, four other Warriors – freshman Julia Young, senior Tess Bennett, sophomore Tara Vanweerdhuizen, and freshman Jade Lowery – also scored 10-or-more points with 17, 11, 10, and 10, respectively. On the boards, Vanweerdhuizen grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with a game-high tying six assists by Tsugawa.

Coming off its first CCC win of the season, Corban wasted little time in taking advantage of the game jumping out to a 15-9 lead on back-to-back free throws by Bennett at the 15:28 mark. The visiting Warriors would extend their lead to nine points (25-16) on a jumper in the paint by Bennett with 10:56 on the clock. Corban would hold a six-point advantage (30-24) with 8:21 left before Concordia closed out the first half on a 21-3 run en route to earning a 12-point lead (45-33) at halftime.

The second half would begin with Concordia building its lead to a game-high 14 points (47-33) and held a double-digit lead until the 13:34 mark when Corban's Tsugawa hit a fast-break jumper in the paint to bring the Warriors within nine points (59-50). The host Cavaliers would push their lead back to double figures at 63-50 before Corban used a 17-4 run over a span of five minutes to tie the score at 67-all on a Vanweerdhuizen jumper in the paint with 7:25 left. Concordia would retake the lead via a 5-1 run resulting in a 72-68 lead for the host Cavaliers before Corban used a 6-0 run to pull ahead by two points (74-72) on a three-pointer by Tsugawa with 3:13 remaining. After Concordia tied the game for only the third time all night at 76-76, the host Cavaliers would finish the game on a 9-3 run knocking down 4-of-6 shots at the free throw line to go along with timely defense en route to earning the hard-fought victory (85-79).

Concordia was led offensively by Malori Dixon with a game-high 25 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field that including a 9-of-11 performance at the free throw line. Three other Cavaliers – Gabi Beyer, Kelly Huey, and McKenna Daly – also scored in double figures tallying 19, 12, and 10 points, respectively, while Daly pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go along with a game-high tying six assists bu Huey.

As a team, Corban combined to shoot 27-of-62 (43.5%) from the field that included a 9-of-23 (39.1%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 16-of-21 (76.2%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Concordia was a combined 33-of-81 (40.7%) from the field, 3-of-15 (20.0%) from long distance, and 16-of-21 (76.2%) at the charity stripe.

Corban will return to action on Friday, January 18th, against the visiting Eagles of Northwest University beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
