EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore Tara Vanweerdhuizen registered her fourth straight double-double with 15 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, as Corban's women's basketball team returning to its winning ways with a 68-58 non-conference victory over New Hope Christian Saturday inside the Rexius Event Center.
With tonight's result, Corban improves to 7-16 overall and New Hope Christian falls to 11-15 on the season.
Along with Vanweerdhuizen's offensive output, seniors
Emily Tsugawa and
Tess Bennett also scored in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Bennett would aid Vanweerdhuizen on the boards with seven rebounds, while Tsugawa handed out a team-high three assists for the Warriors.
New Hope Christian would jump out to a 5-0 lead after the opening three minutes before Corban would finally get on the board via a jumper by sophomore
Haley Holboke with just under 15 minutes left. The host Deacons would push their lead back to five points (9-4) at the 13:24 mark before Corban used a 9-0 run over a span of 90 seconds to pull ahead by four points (13-9) on a three-pointer by freshman
Julia Young with 11:53 on the clock. After New Hope Christian retoook the lead at 24-22 on a lay-in by Kyra Witherspoon with 4:13 left, Corban used a 7-0 run to pull ahead by five points (29-24) on back-to-back free throws by Vanweerdhuizen with just under two minutes left. With 44 seconds left in the opening half, Corban would go ahead by seven points (33-24) on a jumper by Bennett before New Hope Christian scored the final points for a three-point lead (33-29) at halftime.
The second half would see Corban slowly extend its lead to double digits earning a 13-point advantage (46-33) on a jumper in the paint by Bennett with 14:23 left. New Hope Christian would use 14-5 run over a span of five minutes to get within four points (51-47) before Corban pushed its lead back to eight points with four unanswered points, as the final points came off a lay-in by Vanweerdhuizen with 8:18 on the clock. The visiting Warriors would continue to hold at least a six-point lead for the remainder of the game extending it to a game-ending 10-point margin (68-58) for its third victory in their last four games.
New Hope Christian was led offensively by Lei Lolohea with a game-high 17 points, while Deanna Tupai came off the Deacons' bench to provide 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Ginna Lorusso would hand out a game-high five assists for NHC, while Lolohea registered a game-high three steals.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 22-of-59 (37.3%) from the field that included a 6-of-19 (31.6%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 18-of-24 (75.0%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, New Hope Christian was a combined 24-for-62 (38.7%) from the field, 4-of-15 (26.7%) from long distance, and 6-of-21 (28.6%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to action on Friday, February 1st, against the NAIA's No. 5-ranked Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon beginning at 5:30 p.m. in La Grande.
