Warriors Fall to Southern Oregon in Straight Sets

BOX SCORE

ASHLAND, Ore. – Despite a team-high 11 kills by senior Jenny Harman, Corban's women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Southern Oregon, 3-0 (11-25, 17-25, 15-25), Saturday inside Riehm Arena.

Corban (5-17, 2-11 CCC) was led offensively by Harman's second double-digit kill total of the season, as the fourth-year Warrior tallied her 11 kills on just 15 swings without an error. Along with Harman, the trio of senior Olivia Shropshire, junior Claire Bailey, and freshman Madison Purnell added three kills each. Freshman setter Haley Meili handed out a team-high 14 assists in a reserve role, while junior libero Katherine Salness tallied a team-high 15 digs defensively to go along with a pair of blocks by Purnell.

Southern Oregon (12-7, 9-3 CCC) got a match-high 13 kills from Mona Goudarzian, while Liz Madden added nine kills with Nikki Keller tallying a match-high five blocks at the net. Lauren McGowne handed out a match-high 34 assists for the Raiders, while Renee Yomtob registered a match-high 18 digs defensively for SOU.

The opening set would begin with Southern Oregon scoring 13 unanswered points on the serving of Paulla Pinheiro, as Corban burned both its timeouts during the Raiders' 13-0 run to start the match. Over the final 23 combined points, Corban hung with Southern Oregon as the Raiders scored just one more point (12-11) than the visiting Warriors. Unfortunately, SOU's lead would be too much for Corban to overcome resulting in a 25-11 victory on a set-closing kill by Madden.

Set #2 would begin with Southern Oregon breaking a 2-2 tie with a 13-2 run that resulted in a 15-4 lead for the Raiders on a kill by Goudarzian. Corban would battle back to within eight points (19-11) with a 7-4 run that ending with a service ace by Shropshire. The visiting Warriors could not get any closer, as they watched Southern Oregon end the set on a combo block by McGowne and Keller for the 25-17 victory.

The third and final set would see Corban build an early two-point lead (10-8) before Southern Oregon used a 10-1 run to pull ahead by seven points (18-11) on a combo block by Goudarzian and Keller. The visiting Warriors would get as close as six points (18-12) on a combo block by Purnell and Bailey, as Southern Oregon regrouped and closed out the set on a 7-3 run that concluded with a match-ending kill by Madden for the three-set sweep.

As a team, Corban combined to hit .108 (25-15-93) and Southern Oregon registered a combined hitting percentage of .267 (39-12-101).

Corban will return to action on Friday, October 25th, against conference rival Northwest Christian beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
