Warriors Upset Concordia With Three Second Half Goals

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – Thanks to three second half goals within a 15-minute span, Corban's men's soccer team upset the NAIA's No. 12-ranked Cavaliers of Concordia, 3-0, Saturday on Warrior Field to remain unbeaten and at the top of the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings.

With today's victory, Corban (8-0-1, 5-0-1 in CCC) snapped a 15-game home losing streak and 12-game losing streak overall to Concordia becoming the first team all season to defeat the Cavaliers by three-or-more goals. On the other side, Concordia (7-3-0, 4-2-0 CCC) had its conference-high four-game winning streak snapped and has now lost more than one league game in a season for the first time since 2009.

"This win is fantastic. I fell really good for the guys," said head coach Aaron Lewis, who became the first leader of the Warriors to defeat Concordia since Dave Irby led Corban to a 3-1 win over Concordia in Portland on October 12, 2006.

Thanks to today's victory in front a season-record crowd of nearly 500 fans, Corban extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to nine games and also tied the longest streak without a loss in program history going 8-0-1 over a nine-game stretch.

In a very evenly played first half in which both teams registered five shots with three being on target for both squads, Corban broke the deadlock in the 67th minute when freshman Nathaniel Cheney collected a pass that ricocheted off a Concordia defender and unloaded a shot from 18 yards out into the lower right corner of the net for his first collegiate goal and the eventual game-winner.

"The ball came to Kyle (Hammond) and he tried to flick me through, but the defender took a bad touch and I finished it," said Cheney about his game-winning goal.

Just over six minutes later, Corban would strike again when freshman Kemar Prince headed a pass from junior Kyle Hammond over a leaping Concordia keeper before tapping home a wide-open ball in the box from three yards out at the 72:30 mark. Hammond's initial pass from the far sideline found Prince's head, as he out jumped the Cavs' keeper and played the ball behind CU's defense where he poked the ball into the back of the net for his team-high tying fourth goal of the season.

Nine minutes later, Corban would score its third and final goal when sophomore James Williamson played a long pass behind Concordia's defense onto freshman Bobby Hutchin, who went one-on-one with the Cavaliers' goalkeeper and poked a shot into the lower right corner for the Warriors' third and final goal of the afternoon.

When talking about his team's play in the first half compared to the second half, Coach Lewis said, "I think that we finished chances in the second half. I think that maybe we wore them down a little bit with some of the pressure and winning a lot of the balls in the air. Concordia is a very good soccer team and a lot of credit goes to them, as they have a really good program and for us to have this victory means a lot because of what they have done."

Concordia would get two good looks at goal in the final few minutes without either shot finding the back of the net thanks to the play of freshman goalkeeper Jordan Farr. The first-year Warrior, who was celebrating his 19th birthday today, recorded his sixth straight shutout thanks to a game and career-high eight saves that extends Farr's scoreless streak to 650 straight minutes that includes 560 minutes in conference play without allowing a goal.

For Concordia, net-minder Scott Gross registered seven saves despite allowing three goals in a single game for only the second time this season.

Overall, Corban registered three more shots (15-to-12) than Concordia that included a 10-to-7 advantage in the second half. Despite Concordia earning one more corner kick (5-to-4) than the host Warriors, Corban held a 3-to-1 advantage in that category over the final 45 minutes of play.

Corban will put its unbeaten streak on the line in seven days – Saturday, October 12th – against CCC rival Northwest Christian beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
