BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Junior
Arsinio Walker and freshman
Kemar Prince, who are both from Jamaica, each scored a first half goal to lead Corban's men's soccer team to a Cascade Collegiate Conference victory over The College of Idaho Friday afternoon on Warrior Field.
Corban (12-1-2, 9-1-2 CCC) took one step closer to capturing its first Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season title since 1997 with today's win, while The College of Idaho (4-12-0, 4-8-0 CCC) dropped to within one loss of being eliminated from playoff contention.
"Both Kemar and Arsinio played well today in their specific roles," said head coach
Aaron Lewis. "Our front line did a good job again limiting their backline of time to find their midfield and beyond. The movement from our guys in the attack today was more dangerous than it's been recently, and continues to be a point of emphasis for us moving into playoffs."
After a scoreless 39-plus minutes, Walker scored the eventual game-winning goal on a combo assist from Prince and junior
Derik Chaney in the 40th minute. Chaney would begin the scoring play with a pass from the far sideline to Prince, who quickly sent a ball into the box that Walker collected and chipped over C of I's goalkeeper for his third goal of the season.
Just over three minutes later, Prince would get into the scoring act when he took a pass from junior
Kyle Hammond and scored his team-high tying fifth goal of the season. Hammond would tally his second assist of the season with a pass behind the Coyotes' defense to a wide-open Prince, who flicked a shot up and over a diving C of I net-minder for the 2-0 Warrior lead at the 42:25 mark.
Neither team would score again in the first half, as Corban dominated play with an eight-shot advantage (9-to-1) that included a 6-0 difference in shots on goal.
The College of Idaho's best scoring chance came in the 63rd minute when a Coyote player was pulled down in the box to give C of I a penalty kick. The College of Idaho's Yan Gioseffi would step up to the circle and cracked a shot to the left side of the goal that Corban's freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Farr pushed over the end line to keep the Coyotes off the board.
Despite an offensive push near the end of the game by C of I, Corban would not falter collecting nine more shots (13-to-4) in the second half than the Coyotes that included a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Farr would need to make only three saves in order to secure his ninth shutout of the season, as the first-year Warrior watched his Goals Against Average (GAA) drop to a team and conference-low 0.53 in almost 1,200 minutes between the pipes. At the other end of the field, The College of Idaho's Colin Benham-Marin tallied a game-high 12 saves that included a pair of finger tip saves in both halves to keep the Coyotes within striking distance.
"Jordan had nice game today," commented Lewis. "The penalty kick save was a big play in today's match and he also continues to read balls played over the top well, which limits team's chances in that area."
Overall, Corban registered 17 more shots (22-to-5) than The College of Idaho with the Warriors putting 13 shots on target versus C of I's three. In a physical game that saw three yellow cards handed out, the two teams combined for 35 fouls with The College of Idaho holding an advantage in corner kicks (8-to-4) that included a 5-to-1 difference in the first half.
Corban will close out its home regular season schedule tomorrow – Saturday, November 2nd – against Oregon Tech beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem. Before the game, senior
Steffan Bard will be honored for four years of service to the program.
