BOX SCORE
SPOKANE, Wash. – In the season-opener for Corban's women's basketball team, junior Tara Vanweerdhuizen registered a double-double with a team and game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds on 11-of-16 shooting from the field in the Warriors' 91-71 loss to the Argos of Great Falls Friday at the Spokane Challenge hosted by Eastern Oregon University.
Corban (0-1) also got 11 points from sophomore
Julia Young to go along with a nine-point effort by sophomore
Megan Benedict off the Warriors' bench. Ten-of-13 players scored at least two points for Corban, as freshman
Sadie Pilgeram and sophomore
Kelli Christenson added seven and six points, respectively, for the Warriors. Along with Vanweerdhuizen's effort on the boards, junior
Danielle Vanderstoel grabbed six rebounds to go along with Pilgeram's four-rebound performance. Young led Corban with a game-high tying four assists, while Vanweerdhuizen registered the Warriors' only blocked shot of the night to move within eight of breaking the all-time career record in school history.
Great Falls (3-0) was led offensively by Lindsey Abramson with 22 points, while four other Argos – Erin Legal, Darah Huertas-Vining, Taylor Statton, and Nneka Nnadi – also scored in double figures with 18, 12, 10, and 10 points, respectively. Kendalyn Brainard led UGF with six rebounds, while Legal handed out a game-high tying four assists for the Argos.
A tight game over the opening three minutes would see Corban hold a slim one-point lead (9-8) on a Pilgeram jumper in the paint with just over 17 minutes left before Great Falls used a 7-0 run over a span of two minutes to pull ahead by six points (15-9) on a Statton jumper with 15:02 remaining. UGF would continue to hold the lead pushing the margin to double digits (27-17) with 7:30 on the clock following a three-pointer by Legal. Over the final seven-and-a-half minutes, Great Falls would slowly continue adding to its lead resulting in an 18-point advantage (47-29) at halftime.
The second half would begin with Great Falls extending its lead to a game-high 31 points (62-31) on a jumper in the paint by Nnadi with 15:11 left. Over the next 12 minutes, Corban would use a 24-16 run to pull within 13 points (78-65) on a Vanweerdhuizen jumper in the paint. Unfortunately that would be as close as the Warriors would get, as Great Falls closed out the game on a 13-6 run for the final margin of 20 points (91-71).
Overall, Corban shot a combined 21-for-49 (42.9%) from the field that included a 1-for-12 (8.3%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 28-for-37 (75.7%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Great Falls was a combined 35-for-67 (52.2%) from the field, 7-for-21 (33.3%) from long distance, and 14-for-19 (73.7%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will close out play at this weekend's season-opening Spokane Challenge tomorrow – Saturday, November 2nd – against Montana State-Northern beginning at 3:00 p.m. on the campus of Spokane Falls Community College in Spokane, Washington.
