Junior Tara Vanweerdhuizen scored in double digits for the second straight night, as Corban closed out play at the Spokane Challenge Saturday against Frontier Conference member Montana State-Northern.

Vanweerdhuizen Registers Double-Double Against MSUN

SPOKANE, Wash. – In its second game of back-to-back nights at the Spokane Challenge hosted by Eastern Oregon University, Corban's women's basketball team fell to Montana State-Northern, 66-48, Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College despite 14 points and 12 rebounds by junior Tara Vanweerdhizen.

Corban (0-2) did not have any other player score more than six points, as junior Megan Benedict provided that total off the bench for the Warriors. MSU-Northern (4-0) was led offensively by A'Jha Edwards with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Taylor Cummings added 10 points for the Skylights.

Over the opening five minutes, Corban gained a one-point lead (7-6) on a Vanweerdhuizen lay-in with exactly 15 minutes left on the clock. Over the next two minutes, MSU-Northern used an 8-0 run to pull ahead by seven points (14-7) on a pair of free throws by Rachelle Bennett with just over 13 minutes remaining. The Skylights would push their lead to double digits (19-9) before holding at least a seven-point cushion for the remainder of the first half, as Corban pulled within seven points (26-19) on a lay-in by freshman Sadie Pilgeram with 2:24 left. MSUN would close out the half by scoring two more points than Corban, as the Skylights took a nine-point lead (30-21) into halftime.

The second half would begin with Montana State-Northern quickly building a 16-point lead (40-24) on a three-pointer by Cummings with 16:13 left in the game. Corban would get as close as 12 points (40-28) on a jumper by Vanweerdhuizen with just over 15 minutes left before MSU-Northern used a 22-6 run to push its lead to a game-high 28 points (62-34) on a lay-in by Cummings with 6:38 left. Over the final six-plus minutes, Corban used a 14-4 run for the final margin of 18 points (66-48) with the Warriors' bench scoring 12-of-14 points down the stretch.

As a team, Corban shot a combined 17-for-48 (35.4%) from the field with the Warriors hitting 6-of-18 (33.3%) from beyond the three-point line and 8-of-19 (42.1%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Montana State-Northern was a combined 24-for-53 (45.3%) from the field, 7-of-13 (53.8%) from long distance, and 11-of-22 (50.0%) at the charity stripe.

Corban will return to the hardwood on Friday, November 8th, in its first of two exhibition games this season against a NCAA Division I opponent, as the Warriors take on Oregon State beginning at 7;00 p.m. inside Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.
