Trio in Double Figures Not Enough Against Cougars

BOX SCORE

REDDING, Calif. – In its final game at the TCSA/DAP Hoops Classic, Corban's women's basketball team could not overcome a 15-6 run in the second half falling to California State University, San Marcos, 63-59, Sunday inside the Heritage Student Life Center on the campus of Simpson University.

"For the second night, we played a NAIA D-I program with very good perimeter shooters and we defended really well the first half actually out rebounding them by seven. Unfortunately, they found the net in the second half getting four three's to pull away from us," said head coach Dave Bale. "We had several unforced turnovers that hurt, but we kept in the game with timely shooting of our own. Each of our starters and players off the bench did well in executing our defensive game plan."

For the second night in a row, sophomore Julia Young led Corban (2-3) with a game-high 19 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field that also featured a perfect 8-for-8 performance at the free throw line. Young was aided offensively by freshman Sadie Pilgeram and junior Tara Vanweerdhuizen with 12 points each, while Vanweerdhuizen grabbed a game-high tying 10 rebounds to go along with a game-high 10 assists by sophomore Jade Lowery.

Cal State San Marcos (5-3) would get a team-high 15 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the field by Sherika Miller, while Heather Thompson and Lindsey Uyematsu added 14 and 11 points, respectively. Kimberly Kipp would equal Vanweerdhuizen's effort on the boards with a game-high tying 10 rebounds, while Miller handed out a team-best seven assists for the Cougars.

The first half would begin with CSUSM scoring the first four points before Corban used a 9-0 run over a span of three minutes to take a five-point lead (9-4) on back-to-back free throws by Young with 15:39 on the clock. An 11-0 run by the Cougars over the next five minutes would hand San Marcos a six-point lead (15-9) on a free throw by Miller with just over nine minutes left. Corban would answer back with another 9-0 run en route to earning a three-point lead (18-15) on a jumper by Vanweerdhuizen with 6:23 reamining. The Warriors would continue to hold the lead for the remainder of the first half, as Corban settled for a four-point lead (26-22) at halftime after junior Katherine Salness scored the final points of the opening twenty minutes via a free throw.

Corban would open the second half by extending its lead to six points (28-22) before San Marcos scored seven unanswered points to go ahead by a single point (29-28) with 18:31 left in the game. Neither team would hold more than a two-point lead over the next four minutes resulting in a 33-33 tie with 14:51 showing on the clock. Over the next six-plus minutes, Cal State San Marcos used the aforementioned 15-6 run en route to earning a nine-point cushion (48-39) on a jumper in the paint by Melaya Gaines with 8:08 remaining. Corban would get as close as three points (48-45) with a 6-0 run before CSUSM pushed its lead to seven points (60-53) on a 12-8 run that concluded on a pair of free throws by Alexandria Alvarado with 1:32 left. The Warriors would pull within three points (62-59) following back-to-back free throws by Young with nine seconds left before Cal State San Marcos closed out the game with the final point via a free throw that resulted in a 63-59 win for the Cougars.

On the other hand, San Marcos was a combined 25-for-70 (35.7%) from the field, 5-for-17 (29.4%) from long distance, and 8-for-18 (44.4%) at the charity stripe.
