MONMOUTH, Ore. – Corban's women's basketball team took home the third place trophy with a 52-42 victory over cross town rival Willamette Saturday at the fourth annual Capital City Classic played inside the New PE Building on the campus of Western Oregon University.
Corban (3-4) was led offensively by all-tournament team selections junior Tara Vanweerdhuizen and sophomore
Julia Young with a game-high 12 points each, while Vanweerdhuizen also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds en route to registering her fifth double-double of the season. Sophomores
Megan Benedict and
Jade Lowery also chipped in with nine points each, while Lowery also handed out a game-high four assists to go along with Vanweerdhuizen's game-high four blocked shots.
Willamette (1-5) got a team-high 10 points from Jojo DeLong, while Katie Kalugin and Kylie Towry added eight points each for the Bearcats. Alex Wert pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds for Willamette, while Kalugin, Towry, Rebecca Josephson, and Daena Mau all handed out two assists each.
Over the opening five minutes of the game, both teams battled to an 8-8 tie before Corban used a 5-0 run over a span of 51 seconds en route to earning a 13-8 lead on a three-pointer by Benedict with 14:06 on the clock. Willamette would then use a 12-0 run over a five-minute span to grab a 20-13 lead on a Kalugin lay-in with 9:14 left. A 7-0 run by Corban over a two-minute span would tie the game at 20-20 on a lay-in by Vanweerdhuizen with just under seven minutes on the clock. Willamette would then use a 10-4 run over a span of six minutes en route to building a six-point lead (30-24) before Corban closed out the first half on a 4-0 run to pull within 30-28 at halftime on back-to-back free throws by Young for the final points of the first half.
The second half would begin with Corban using an early run to tie things at 33-33 before the Warriors pushed their lead to eight points (41-33) on a lay-in by junior
Haley Holboke with 10:01 remaining. Willamette would pull within three points (43-40) on a free throw by Wert with exactly five minutes left before Corban used a 7-0 run over a span of four-in-a-half minutes resulting in a 50-40 lead for the Warriors. Both teams scored two points over the final 30 seconds, as Corban earned the 52-42 victory.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 18-for-49 (36.7%) from the field that included a 3-for-14 (21.4%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 13-for-21 (61.9%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Willamette was a combined 16-for-47 (34.0%) from the field, 4-for-21 (19.0%) from long distance, and 6-of-12 (50.0%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to action on Tuesday, December 3rd, in the Warriors' first home game of the season against NCAA Division III member George Fox beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
