EUGENE, Ore. – Junior Tara Vanweerdhuizen and sophomore
Jade Lowery each scored 13 points, as Corban's women's basketball team moved above .500 for the first time this season with a 63-52 win over New Hope Christian Saturday inside the Rexius Event Center.
Corban (8-7) got a combined shooting performance of 10-of-23 from Vanweerdhuizen and Lowery, as junior
Haley Holboke added a season-high eight points off the Warriors' bench. Lowery and freshman
Sadie Pilgeram grabbed a team-high eight rebounds apiece, while Lowery also added a team-best three assists to go along with a game-high three blocked shots by Vanweerdhuizen.
New Hope Christian (2-15) got a double-double from Lei Lolohea with game-high performances of 20 points and 17 rebounds, while also handing out a game-high four assists for the Deacons. Taya Harbick was the only other Deacon in double figures with 12 points, while Dorian Perkey and Jess Logan added nine and eight points, respectively.
The game would begin as a back-and-forth battle through the opening 14-plus minutes, as each team scored 14 points before Corban used a 14-1 run over a span of four minutes that resulted in a 28-15 lead for the Warriors on a lay-in by Holboke with 1:25 on the clock. New Hope Christian would score the final points of the opening half when Karina Akaka-Folau hit a jumper resulting in a 28-17 lead for the Warriors at halftime.
New Hope Christian would begin the second half by getting within nine points (30-21) on a jumper by Perkey with 18:05 left. Over the next two-plus minutes, Corban used a 7-0 run to extend its lead to 16 points (37-21) on an old-fashion three-point play by Lowery with 15:49 remaining. A 9-0 run by the host Deacons would pull NHCC within seven points (37-30) before Corban pushed its lead to 14 points (50-36) with a 13-6 run over a five-minute span that concluded on a lay-in by sophomore
Julia Young with just over nine minutes on the clock. The visiting Warriors would hold a double-digit lead until the 3:46 mark when Perkey hit a jumper that pulled New Hope Christian within seven points (54-47). That would be as close as Corban would allow the home team to get, as the Warriors closed the game on a 9-5 run for a final score of 63-52 en route to earning their eighth win of the season.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 22-of-67 (32.8%) from the field that included a 4-for-18 (22.2%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 15-of-22 (68.2%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, New Hope Christian was a combined 21-of-57 (36.8%) from the field, 5-of-19 (26.3%) from long distance, and 5-of-13 (38.5%) at the charity stripe.
Corban returns to action on Friday, January 3rd, against Cascade Collegiate Conference opponent and nationally-ranked Oregon Tech beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Danny Miles Court in Klamath Falls.
