SALEM, Ore. – In the home opener for Corban's women's basketball team, the starters for the Warriors combined for over 80% of the team's total points in a 66-36 loss to the visiting Bruins of George Fox Tuesday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Corban (3-5) was led offensively by sophomore
Jade Lowery with nine points, while junior Tara Vanweerdhuizen and sophomore
Julia Young chipped in with eight and six points, respectively. Freshman
Sadie Pilgeram led the Warriors' bench with five points, while junior
Katherine Salness and sophomore
Megan Benedict added three points each to go along with a point apiece by sophomore
Kelli Christenson and freshman
Olivia Erskine for Corban's point total. On the boards, Vanweerdhuizen led the Warriors with six rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots to go along with a team-high two assists by Young.
George Fox (5-0) had three players in double figures led by Hayley Cusick and Justin Benner with a game-high 13 points each, while Dacia Heckendorf added 12 points and a game-high five assists for the Bruins. Megan Arnoldy and Salem-native Jamie Roos provided six and five points, respectively, while Heckendorf and Lauren Codling grabbed a team-high five rebounds each.
In the opening five minutes, George Fox built an eight-point lead (14-6) on a three-pointer by Roos before Corban used a 9-4 run over a span of eight minutes to pull within three points (18-15) on a jumper by Young with 7:08 on the clock. A quick 18-3 run by the visiting Bruins over a span of nearly seven minutes helped George Fox build an 18-point lead (36-18) before Corban scored the final points of the first half on a lay-in by Vanweerdhuizen for the difference at halftime (36-20).
The second half began with George Fox scoring eight of the first nine points over a three-minute stretch en route to building a 23-point cushion (44-21) at the 16:59 mark. Over the next 13 minutes, the visiting Bruins would slowly increase their lead to a game-high 30 points (64-34) on a three-pointer by Kylee Parker with just over three minutes left in the game. Corban would pull within 28 points (64-36) on a free throw by Christenson in the final two minutes before George Fox settled for the 30-point win (66-36).
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 13-for-46 (28.3%) from the field that included a 2-for-16 (12.5%) performance from beyond the three-point line and an 8-for-14 (57.1%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, George Fox was a combined 22-for-60 (36.7%) from the field, 8-for-18 (44.4%) from long distance, and 14-for-21 (66.7%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to action on Friday, December 6th, when the Warriors open Cascade Collegiate Conference play against rival Northwest Christian beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
