Kent Foster added 17 and 16 points, respectively, in Corban's 79-75 loss to the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech Saturday on Danny Miles Court to close out the regular season.
Corban (9-18, 5-13 CCC) now will move onto the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament where the Warriors will take on regular season co-champions and top-seeded Warner Pacific in the first round next week. The Warriors also got a nine-point effort by junior
Josiah Sebens and a team-high eight rebounds from senior
Jacob Kopra, while Kopra and freshman
Cyrus Ward also handed out a team-high three assists each.
Oregon Tech (16-14, 7-11 CCC) was led by Kyle Waits with a game-high 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the field to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds, while David Clarke added 17 points and a game-high four assists for the Owls.
In the opening 18 seconds, Oregon Tech would score on a lay-in by Waits and never trailed again increasing its lead to as much as 11 points (13-2) at the 14:23 mark on a three-pointer by Waits. Corban would get as close as four points (17-13) thanks to an 11-4 run that concluded on a jumper by Ward with 10:37 remaining. Over the next three-plus minutes, Oregon Tech used a 15-5 run to pull ahead by 18 points (32-14) and never relinquished its double-digit lead settling for a 14-point advantage (44-30) at halftime.
The second half would begin with Oregon Tech holding at least an 11-point lead over the opening 17 minutes before Corban began to whittle away at the Owls 73-62 lead. The visiting Warriors would use a 12-5 run over a span of three minutes to pull within three points (78-75) on a slicing lay-in by Foster with eight seconds left. After a foul by Corban put OIT's Austen Flint at the line with 4.1 second left, Flint made one-of-two and a last-second three-point attempted by Kopra was off-target allowing Oregon Tech to capture the hard-fought four-point win (79-75).
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 27-of-59 (45.8%) from the field that included a 5-of-18 (27.8%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 16-of-23 (69.6%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Oregon Tech was a combined 26-of-55 (47.3%) from the field, 9-of-24 (37.5%) from long distance, and 18-of-25 (72.0%) at the charity stripe.
As mentioned previously, Corban will return to the hardwood in the opening round of the CCC Tournament against No. 1-seed and nationally-ranked Warner Pacific on Wednesday, February 20th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside C.C. Perry Gymnasium in Portland.
