SPOKANE, Wash. – After being swept in its first four matches at the Red Lion Cascade/Frontier Challenge, Corban's women's volleyball team took two of the top three teams this weekend to four sets before Saturday falling to Rocky Mountain and the NAIA's No. 25-ranked Carroll inside The HUB Sports Center.
With today's results, Corban begins its season at 0-6 overall.
GAME #1 – ROCKY MOUNTAIN 3, CORBAN 1 (25-27, 25-23, 16-25, 10-25)
In Saturday's opening match, Corban would win its first set of the season but could not overcome a high-powered offense by the Battlin' Bears.
Junior Miah Smith would led the Warriors with 10 kills, while seniors Olivia Shropshire and Jenny Harman added eight kills each. Freshman Madison Purnell would add seven kills, while fellow freshman Haley Meili handed out a team-best 21assists to go along with 14 digs by junior Katherine Salness. At the net, Corban would combined for 13.5 blocks led by Harman with seven.
The opening set would see Rocky Mountain build a four-point lead (12-8) before Corban used an 11-5 run to knot things at 17-17 on a service ace by Shropshire. Both teams would trade points back-and-forth until Corban had its first set point at 24-23 on a kill by Smith. Unfortunately, Rocky Mountain would fend off the Warriors' upset bid and held a 25-24 lead after a service ace by Sky Gabel gave the Bears their first set point. Corban would get another kill by Smith that keep the set alive before RMC scored the final two points on back-to-back kills for the hard-fought 27-25 victory.
Set #2 would see Corban break an early 2-2 tie with an 11-5 run that handed the Warriors a six-point lead (13-7) on a combo block by Harman and Smith. Rocky Mountain would then use a 7-1 run to tie the set at 14-all before Corban jumped ahead by two points (20-18) on another kill by Smith. A 3-0 run by Rocky Mountain would give the Bears a 21-20 lead before Corban used a set-ending 5-2 run to earn the 25-23 victory that tied the match at a set apiece.
The third set would belong to Rocky Mountain from the opening serve, as the Battlin' Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead before pushing their advantage to 10 points (21-11) on a Corban service error. Despite Corban closing out the set on a 6-4 run, Rocky Mountain's lead would be too much to overcome as the Battlin' Bears earning the lop-sided victory (25-16).
Set #4 would also be a one-sided affair, as Rocky Mountain cruised to a 20-8 lead over the opening 28 combined points before the Bears ended the match with a 25-10 victory.
RMC's Yang Yang would lead all players with 18 kills and 10 digs, while Ahlea Billis and Anna Dewald added 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Tori Bertsch would hand out a match-high 33 assists, while Jennifer Donaldson anchored the Bears' defense with a match-high 28 digs.
GAME #2 – CARROLL 3, CORBAN 1 (22-25, 18-25, 25-19, 19-25)
The final match of the weekend would be another hard-fought affair for Corban, as the Warriors took the nation's No. 25-ranked Saints of Carroll to four sets before falling to the high-powered team from Montana.
Shropshire would lead the Warriors with a match-high 14 kills, while junior Claire Bailey added 10 kills to go along with a nine-kill effort by Smith. Meili would once again lead the Warriors' offense with 23 assists, while Salness and senior Bethany Durre combined for 29 digs defensively with 15 and 14, respectively. At the net, Purnell register four blocks to go along with three by Harman.
The opening set would see Carroll build an eight-point lead (24-16) before Corban used a 6-0 run to pull within two points (24-22) behind the serving arm of Shropshire. Unfortunately, the Saints' lead would be too much to overcome as Kathleen Mulligan ended the Warriors' comeback with a set-ending kill for the 25-22 win by Carroll.
Set #2 would see Carroll break a 6-6 tie with a 16-10 run to pull ahead by six points (22-16) before the Saints closed out the second set with the seven-point win (25-18).
The third set would belong to Corban, as the Warriors used a 16-8 run that broke a 2-2 tie and handed the Warriors an eight-point lead (18-10) on a combo block by freshman Payton Wilcox and Purnell. Carroll would get within three points (22-18) before Corban scored three of the set's final four points en route to earning the hard-fought 25-19 victory.
Set #4 would see Carroll jump out to a 13-3 lead before Corban began a slow climb back pulling within five points (24-19) thanks to a 16-9 run. Unfortunately, Carroll's intial lead was too much as the Saints got a match-ending kill by Mulligan for the 25-19 victory and four-set win.
Sarah Roshak led Carroll with 13 kills on 23 attempts with just one attack error, while Rebecca Sweeney added nine kills. Emily Burk and Jonni Dorr combined to hand out 34 assists for the Saints, while Catie Hanser anchored Carroll's defense with a match-high 17 digs.
Corban will return to action on Friday, August 31st, against Mills College beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
