Warriors Kick Off Home Season With Win Over Flames

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – Freshman Bobby Hutchin and junior Josh Hamilton each scored goals in a hard-fought 2-1 victory for Corban's men's soccer team over Bethesda University of California Tuesday in a non-conference game on Warrior Field.

With the win, Corban improves to 2-0-0 on the season and Bethesda falls to 1-1-0 on its season-opening five-game road trip in Oregon, Northern California, and Utah.

Less than 120 seconds into the game, Hutchin would team with sophomore James Williamson on a through ball behind the Bethesda defense for his first goal of the season. At the 1:59 mark, Williamson sent a perfectly placed pass through a wall of Flame defenders onto the awaiting foot of Hutchin, who deposited the first shot of the game into the back of the net for an early 1-0 Corban lead.

Less than seven minutes later, Bethesda would tie the game at 1-1 thanks to a goal by Richard Mendez after he received a cross through the box from Adrean Gonzalez. Gonzalez's pass would elude a handful of Corban defenders before finding Mendez, who poked a shot past Corban's goalkeeper for the Flames' lone goal of the afternoon.

In the 15th minute, Corban was awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box where Hamilton wasted no time in setting up the shot and then letting it crack while the Bethesda goalkeeper was trying to setup his defensive wall. Without argument or any defensive tricks from Bethesda, Hamilton placed the ball down and quickly lifted a shot into the right side of the goal for his second score of the season and a 2-1 Corban lead.

Neither team would score again, as Corban held a slim four-shot advantage (11-to-7) for the game that included a 6-to-2 difference in shots-on-goal.

The goalkeeping duo of junior Steven Mason and freshman Jordan Farr would keep Bethesda at arm's length, as Mason did not register a save in 45 minutes between the pipes in the first half and Farr tallied the Warriors' lone save of the game during his time in goal in the second half. On the other hand, Bethesda's HyeoCkjin Choi tallied a game-high four saves despite allowing both goals in the loss.

Corban will return to the field on Friday, September 6th, in a non-conference game against Trinity Lutheran beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
