Warriors Fall to NAIA's No. 23-Ranked Cavs of Concordia

PORTLAND, Ore. – Against the NAIA's No. 23-ranked Cavaliers of Concordia, juniors Claire Bailey and Miah Smith combined for 17 kills in Corban's three-set loss, 3-0 (23-25, 18-25, 14-25), Friday inside Cavalier Gymnasium.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia pushes its winning streak to a conference-high seven straight matches improving to 9-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league matches.

Bailey led the Warriors' offense with nine kills, while Smith added eight and senior Alex Matulewicz chipped in with six kills. The freshman setting duo of Haley Meili and Payton Wilcox combined to hand out 22 assists with each first-year Warrior handing out 11, while junior libero Katherine Salness anchored Corban's defense with a team-high 11 digs. At the net, senior Jenny Harman, freshman Madison Purnell, and Smith each registered two blocks.

In the opening set, Corban would overcome an early three-point deficit (13-10) with a 5-0 run that gave the visiting Warriors a 15-13 lead after on a service ace by Matulewicz. Corban would push its lead to three points (23-20) on a kill by Harman before Concordia scored the final five points of the set en route to earning the come-from-behind victory (25-23) thanks to a set-ending kill by Jackie Stein.

Set #2 would begin with Corban building an 8-4 lead on a kill by Bailey before Concordia used an 18-8 run en route to grabbing a six-point lead (22-16) on a kill by Amanda Goringe. Following a timeout by the Warriors, Concordia's lead would be too much for Corban to overcome with the host Cavaliers coasting to a seven-point win (25-18).

The third and final set would begin with both teams trading points before Concordia used a 7-1 run that resulted in an 8-2 lead for the host Cavaliers. Concordia would push their lead to 10 points (18-8) on a kill by Mariah Raudsepp before the Cavaliers closed out the set on a match-ending service ace by Leslie Hanks for the 25-14 victory and three-set sweep.

Stein led all players with a match-high 13 kills for Concordia, as Raudsepp added 11 kills and a match-high three blocks to go along with 11 kills as well by Brianna Hogan. Lindsay Mangan would hand out a match-high 38 assists, while Melanie Miller provided a match-high 15 digs defensively for the Cavaliers.

Corban will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, September 14th – against the Knights of Warner Pacific beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside C.C. Perry Gymnasium in Portland.
