Tyler Edwards came off the bench to score a team-high tying 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arch, as Corban's men's basketball team fell to the visiting Knights of Warner Pacific, 74-56, Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Corban (6-9, 2-4 CCC) had four players score in double figures, as Edwards was aided by junior
Jordan Carter, senior
Josiah Sebens, and sophomore
Cyrus Ward with 12, 10, and 10 points, respectively. Sebens also led the Warriors in rebounds with six, while Roth handed out a team-high five assists to go along with a four-assist, three-steal effort by Carter.
Warner Pacific (9-9, 3-3 CCC) was led offensively by Doug Thomas with 23 points that included 17 in the first half, while Marcus Moore chipped in with 12 points off the Knights' bench. Michael Hall pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for Warner Pacific, while Josh Black dished out a game-high six assists for the visiting Knights.
In the game's opening three minutes, Sebens would single-handedly put Corban ahead by two points (7-5) after he scored the Warriors' first seven points before Warner Pacific used a 13-0 run over a span of five minutes to pull ahead 18-7 on a free throw by Michael Moreland with just under 10 minutes on the clock. Corban would get as close as eight points (21-13) following a three-pointer by Edwards with 6:46 left before Warner Pacific closed out the first half on a 14-7 run that resulted in a 15-point lead (35-20) for the Knights at halftime.
Corban began the second half by using a 10-3 run to pull within eight points (38-30) on a lay-in by Carter with 16:00 remaining, as Warner Pacific would not allow the host Warriors to get any closer thanks to an 18-6 run over a span of seven minutes that resulted in a 56-36 lead for the visitors. Corban would never pull within single digits for the remainder of the game, as Warner Pacific extended its lead to a game-high 21 points (72-51) before settling for an 18-point win (74-56) after freshman
Michael Garrett hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer for the Warriors to cap the game's scoring.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 20-for-50 (40.0%) from the field that included a 7-of-19 (36.8%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 9-of-11 (81.8%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Warner Pacific was a combined 27-for-50 (54.0%) from the field, 8-for-22 (36.4%) from long distance, and 12-of-18 (66.7%) at the charity stripe.
Corban returns to the hardwood tomorrow – Saturday, January 11th – against the visiting Cavaliers of Concordia beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
