BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Junior Tara Vanweerdhuizen became the 16th player in program history to score 1,000-or-more career points with the help of a game-high 15 on 6-of-15 shooting from the field, as Corban's women's basketball team pushed its home winning streak to five games with a 64-57 victory over Concordia Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Head coach
Dave Bale said that the key to their success was due to the limited turnovers in the second half of the game. "We did a great job of off-ball defense. We are 6-and-1 in conference and a lot of people weren't given us a chance. The ladies have stepped it up and are doing well, practicing and working hard. I'm proud of how everyone performed tonight."
Corban (11-8, 6-1 CCC) got help offensively from the sophomore duo
Jade Lowery and
Megan Benedict, as the pair also scored in the double digits 14 and 11 points, respectively. Vanweerdhuizen also controlled the boards with a game-high 16 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass, and a game-high five blocks. Lowery ran the Warriors' effort with presentence thanks to a game-high four assists.
Concordia (3-15, 1-6 CCC) was led in points by Gaby Beyer with 17 points off the Cavaliers' bench, while Caitlyn McCutcheon followed with 14 and Janae Klarich added 10 points. McCutcheon also led the Cavaliers with nine rebounds.
Behind by two during the first minutes of the game, the Warriors quickly took off and kept a lead over the Cavaliers for the duration of the night. Six three-point shots were made by the Warriors within the first half, easily outdoing the Cavaliers who only had one shot made from beyond the three-point line. The score at the end of the half had the Warriors up by double digits (37-27).
Despite Concordia attempting a comeback in the second half, Corban continued to hold the lead and with nine minutes left, Vanweerdhuizen made her 1,000th career point on a lay-in after an assist by freshman
Sadie Pilgeram. Pilgeram also dropped in a three-point shot with four minutes left in the half that sealed the win for the Warriors.
"It's exciting, but I couldn't have done it without my team," said Vanweerdhuizen when asked about her accomplishment in being one of only 16 players to reach the 1,000 career point mark. Vanweedhuizen states that she didn't know that she was close to reaching the feat until after she was informed by a teammate that the public address announcer had informed the crown of her accomplishment.
As a team, Corban combined to hit 24-of-65 (36.9%) shots from the field, including 9-of-21 (42.9%) from behind the three-point line and 7-of-12 (58.3%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Concordia knocked down a combined total of 23-of-60 (38.3%) shots, including 5-of-18 (27.8%) from long distance and 6-of-8 (75%) at the charity stripe.
