Jordan Carter scored a game-high 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, as Corban's men's basketball team fell to the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon, 74-65, Saturday inside Quinn Coliseum.
Corban (6-12, 2-7 CCC) also got double-digit scoring from sophomore
Cyrus Ward and senior
Josiah Sebens with 12 and 10 points, respectively, as Ward grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with a team-best three assists. Freshman
Aaron Withe added eight points off the Warriors' bench, while fellow freshman
Ernst Kruger chipped in with six points for Corban.
Eastern Oregon (12-7, 3-6 CCC) had four players – Tony Eackles, Kevin Attila, Kyllian Wood, and Kalvin Johanson – score in double figures with 17, 13, 11, and 10 points, respectively, while Johanson also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers en route to registering a double-double. Attila handed out a game-high six assists, while Eackles registered a game-high two steals for EOU.
After both teams traded baskets over the game's opening minute, Eastern Oregon used an 11-4 run over a span of three-and-a-half minutes to pull ahead by seven points (13-6) on a Wood tip-in at the 15:29 mark. Almost four minutes later, the host Mountaineers extended their lead to double digits (19-8) on a Johanson tip-in with 11:44 on the clock. Corban would pull within five points (19-14) after scoring six unanswered points with the final ones coming on a jumper in the paint by Kruger with just under eight minutes left. Over the next seven minutes, Eastern Oregon used a 19-7 run to extend its lead to 17 points (38-21) before Corban scored the final points of the first half on a jumper in the paint by Carter for a 15-point difference (38-23) at halftime.
The second half would see Eastern Oregon slowly extend its lead to 20 points (55-35) with a 17-12 run over the opening eight minutes. Corban would cut the Mountaineers' lead down to four points (68-64) with a 29-13 run over a seven-minute span that concluded on back-to-back free throws by Carter with 88 seconds left. Over the final minute-and-a-half, Eastern Oregon took advantage of timely defense and a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line for the final difference of nine points (74-65).
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 20-for-45 (44.4%) from the field that included a 3-for-11 (27.3%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 22-for-26 (84.6%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Eastern Oregon was a combined 21-for-54 (38.9%) from the field, 8-of-31 (25.8%) from long distance, and 24-for-29 (82.8%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the hardwood on Friday, January 24th, against nationally-ranked Northwest beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. in Kirkland, Washington.
