OLYMPIA, Wash. – Junior
Jordan Carter extended his double-digit scoring streak to 12 straight games with a team-high 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, but Corban's men's basketball team could not overcome a late run by Evergreen falling by the final score of 81-66 Saturday inside CRC Gymnasium.
Corban (6-14, 2-9 CCC) also got 14 points from freshman
Caleb Herzberg, as the first-year Warrior was 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point line. Senior
Josiah Sebens chipped in with seven points and a team-high seven rebounds, while also tying Carter for the team-high in assists with four each. All eight Warriors scored at least two points with the five starters providing 55-of-66 points for Corban.
Evergreen (3-15, 2-9 CCC) was led by Dre Taylor with a game-high 33 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field that included a 6-of-7 performance from beyond the three-point line, while two other Geoducks – Jordan Dam and Marc Taylor – also scored in double figures with 21 and 12 points, respectively. Cody Peters pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for Evergreen, while Frankie Johnson handed out a game-high seven assists for the Geoducks.
The game began with Evergreen scoring the first seven points over the opening three minutes until Corban finally got on the board after a three-pointer by Herzberg at the 17-minute mark extended the Warriors' NAIA-record streak to 893 straight games with at least one three-pointer made. Over the next two-plus minutes, Evergreen pushed its lead to nine points (12-3) with a 5-0 run before Corban used a 14-8 run over the next seven minutes to pull within three points (20-17) on a jumper by freshman
Toby Roth with 7:26 on the clock. At the 5:26 mark, sophomore
Cyrus Ward hit a jumper to pull Corban within 23-21 before Evergreen used a 15-6 run over the next four minutes to go ahead by double digits (38-27) with 1:38 left. Over the final 98 seconds, Corban outscored Evergreen by five points and trailed the host Geoducks 39-33 at halftime after a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Carter.
Over the opening five minutes of the second half, Evergreen would use a 13-9 run to go ahead by 10 points (52-42) on a fast break lay-in by Dam with 15:13 remaining. After the host Geoducks went ahead by the score of 56-45 at the 13:46 mark, Corban used a 15-10 run over a span of nine minutes to pull within six points (66-60) on a fast break lay-in by Carter with 4:52 on the clock. Unfortunately that would be as close as the visiting Warriors would get, as Evergreen scored 14 unanswered points over a four-minute span to pull ahead by 20 points (80-60) on a lay-in by Dam with 55 seconds left. Over the final minute, Corban used a 6-1 run for the final difference of 15 points (81-66).
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 27-for-59 (45.8%) from the field that included an 8-of-17 (47.1%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 4-of-7 (57.1%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Evergreen was a combined 30-of-60 (50.0%) from the field, 12-of-28 (42.9%) from long distance, and 9-of-12 (75.0%) at the charity stripe.
Corban returns to the hardwood on Friday, January 31st, against the NAIA's No. 9-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
