Warriors Led by Lowery in CCC Contest Against Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Despite a game-high 16 points by sophomore Jade Lowery on 5-of-7 shooting from the field that included a 2-for-3 performance from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line, Corban's women's basketball team could not overcome 25 turnovers en route to suffering a 65-48 loss at the hands of The Evergreen State College Saturday inside CRC Gymnasium.

Corban (11-12, 6-5 CCC) also got double-digit scoring from freshman Sadie Pilgeram and junior Tara Vanweerdhuizen with 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Vanweerdhuizen grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots. Pilgeram also added seven rebounds, while Lowery handed out a game-high four assists.

Evergreen (10-8, 6-5 CCC) won its fourth straight game to move into a three-way tie for fifth place in the current Cascade Collegiate Conference standings, as LaNiecia Weatherspoon led the Geoducks with 15 points off the bench. Sammi Clark, Jessica Denmon, and Brittany Gray also scored in double figures with 14, 12, and 11 points, respectively, while Denmon pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with three assists each by Clark, Gray, and Uriah Thomas.

Over the opening three minutes, the game would go back and forth until Corban broke a 4-4 tie with a 7-2 run over a span of five minutes en route to securing an 11-6 lead on back-to-back free throws by sophomore Julia Young at the 11:59 mark. Evergreen would battle back to the tie the game once again at 14-14 with an 8-3 run over a six-minute span before Corban closed out the first half on a 9-3 run that resulted in a 23-17 lead at halftime for the visiting team.

Pilgeram would push the Warriors' lead to eight points (25-17) with a jumper in the opening minute of the second half before Evergreen slowly erased Corban's lead over the next seven minutes to take a 30-29 lead on a jumper in the paint by Weatherspoon with 12:24 on the clock. Over the next 60 seconds, Evergreen would increase their lead to eight points (37-29) when the Geoducks closed an 11-0 run on a Denmon fast break lay-in with 11:38 left. Corban would pull within five points (39-34) on a lay-in by Vanweerdhuizen with 10:22 remaining before Evergreen increased its lead to double-digits (47-34) on a Thomas jumper in the paint with just over eight minutes left. Over the final eight minutes, Evergreen used an 18-14 run en route to securing a 17-point victory (65-48) that extended the Geoducks' home winning streak to two games.

As a team, Corban combined to shoot 18-for-44 (40.9%) from the field that included a 6-of-17 (35.3%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 6-of-8 (75.0%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Evergreen was a combined 23-for-59 (39.0%) from the field, 1-of-8 (12.5%) from long distance, and 18-of-23 (78.3%) at the charity stripe.

Corban will return to action on Friday, January 31st, against the Raiders of Southern Oregon beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
