Jordan Carter extended his double-digit scoring streak to 13 straight games, as Corban's men's basketball team fell to the NAIA's No. 14-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon, 84-60, Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Corban (6-15, 2-10 CCC) was led by Carter with a game-high tying 18 points, while three other starters – senior
Josiah Sebens, freshman
Toby Roth, and freshman
Caleb Herzberg – also scored in double figures with 13, 13, and 10 points, respectively. Carter's offensive effort pulled him within three points of tying former Warrior David Bickham (1982-86) for 15th on the all-time scoring list, while the 6-foot-2 Carter also got within nine points of becoming the 15th player in program history to score 1,500-or-more points in a career. Cyrus Ward pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Warriors to go along with a game-high tying six assists by Roth.
Southern Oregon (19-5, 8-4 CCC) had four players – Dax Daum, Eric Thompson, Kyle Tedder, and Jeff Bush – in double figures with 18, 14, 12, and 12 points, respectively, while Thompson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Raiders. Bush would added to his 12-point night with a game-high tying six assists, while Tim Weber chipped in with seven points and six assists of his own.
After missing its first four shots, Southern Oregon went 7-for-8 from the field and built a 10-point lead (18-8) on a three-pointer by Jacob Kaler with 13:16 on the clock. Corban would get within five points (18-13) on a lay-in by Roth before Southern Oregon used a 20-5 run over the next eight minutes to increase its lead to 38-18 on a three-pointer by Daum at the 4:33 mark. After pushing its lead to 22 points (44-22), the visiting Raiders watched as Corban outscored SOU by three points over the final two minutes of the first half resulting in a 46-27 lead at halftime.
In the opening seven minutes of the second half, Southern Oregon increased its lead to 27 points (65-38) before extending it to a game-high 28 points (68-40) on a lay-in by Thompson with 10:48 left. The host Warriors would pull back within 15 points (68-53) on a three-pointer by Herzberg, but would not get any closer as the visiting Raiders continued to hold a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game and settled for the final difference of 24 points (84-60).
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 23-for-53 (43.4%) from the field that included a 6-for-17 (35.3%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 8-of-9 (88.9%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was a combined 32-for-56 (57.1%) from the field that included a 58.1% (18-of-31) clip in the first half. The Raiders were also 16-of-28 (57.1%) from beyond the arc, including 7-of-12 (58.3%) in the second half, and 4-of-12 (33.3%) at the charity stripe.
Corban returns to the hardwood tomorrow – Saturday, February 1st – against the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
NOTE: Oregon Tech's long-time head coach Danny Miles will be looking to earn career win No. 1,000 and become only the second coach in men's collegiate basketball history to win 1,000-or-more games in a career. Coach Miles earned career win No. 800 on Warrior Court during the 2006-07 season when Oregon Tech defeated George Fox, 84-73, during the Hillyer's Mid-City Ford Classic.
