Corban Volleyball Falls to Northwest Christian in Straight Sets

BOX SCORE

EUGENE, Ore. - In a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) battle, the Corban University volleyball team couldn't complete the series sweep over Northwest Christian and fell to the Beacons in straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) on Friday night.

Corban (5-16, 2-12 CCC) established its serving game early in the first set, as freshman outside hitter Shantelle Hill (Pasco, Wash.) and senior libero Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.) both notched aces in the midst of a 6-2 run. After Northwest Christian managed to regain the lead, 8-7, a kill by senior outside hitter Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) ignited a 4-1 run and forced the Beacons to call a timeout. A kill by freshman middle blocker Bethany Filipenko (Salem, Ore.) put the Navy and Gold up three (18-15), but Northwest Christian managed to close the set on a 10-2 run and claim the first frame.

The second set nearly mirrored the first, as Corban crawled to an early lead, 4-1, after a service ace by sophomore setter Haley Meili (Eugene, Ore.). After Northwest Christian (8-10, 5-9 CCC) charged to a 15-13 advantage, both Hill and freshman middle blocker Sloane Morrison (Edmonds, Wash.) swung in for kills to knot the second frame. The Warriors continued to play catch-up until Smith attacked for a kill to tie the set at 20, but the Beacons rallied for another strong finish to win the second set, 25-20.

In the third set, Corban got off to a rocky start, as the Warriors committed three mishaps and fell behind, 10-5. Two straight kills by Hill and then another by freshman opposite hitter Shelby Miller (Lebanon, Ore.) brought Corban to within two (10-8), but Northwest Christian fired back to stretch its lead to seven (18-11). A kill by Bailey and a Beacon attack error brought Corban to within three (21-18), but that's as close as the Warriors would get. A kill by senior middle blocker Chelsea McGowan lifted the Beacons to set point (24-20), and a Corban attack error surrendered the third set and match to Northwest Christian.

The Warriors were led by Hill, as she attacked for seven kills and three errors out of 25 attempts. In addition, Morrison and Miller chipped in six and five kills, respectively. Corban's defensive effort was led by both Salness and Hill, as they recorded 14 and 13 digs, respectively.

As a team, the Navy and Gold attacked for 29 kills and a 0.096 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, Meili accounted for all of Corban's 27 assists. On the other side of the net, Northwest Christian collected 40 kills, 37 assists, and 57 digs in the match.

The Warriors return to action on Saturday evening for a non-conference matchup against New Hope Christian College in Salem, Ore. at 7 p.m.
