BOX SCORE SALEM, Ore. - The Corban University volleyball team utilized the momentum from an efficient first set en route to a four-set victory (25-21, 25-12, 14-25, 25-15) over Northwest Christian University on Friday night. The win marked the Warriors' second-straight Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) triumph.
In the opening frame, Corban (5-11, 2-7 CCC) jumped to a 4-1 lead after senior outside hitter Miah Smith (Albany, Ore.) and senior outside hitter Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) swung in for a pair of kills to kick-start the Warrior offense. With both teams deadlocked at 21 apiece, freshman outside hitter Shantelle Hill (Pasco, Wash.) compiled a kill followed by a service ace to give the Warriors a smidge of breathing room. A Beacon attack error brought the Warriors to set point, and Bailey connected with senior libero Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.) to attack for a kill and claim the set for Corban. The Warriors' first-set attack percentage of 0.421 was their best effort since the season-opener against New Hope Christian.
In the second set, Bailey accounted for a pair of kills to help the Navy and Gold to a 6-1 lead. After Northwest Christian (4-7, 2-7 CCC) cut Corban's lead to three (14-11), Bailey again came up big, swinging in for four kills to aid a 10-0 run. Leading 24-12, freshman middle blocker Karen Blackmer (Everett, Wash.) rose high for a kill to give the Warriors a two-set advantage.
The third stanza saw Corban's worst offensive showing, as the Warriors attacked for a hitting percentage of zero. The Beacons raced to a 20-8 lead capped by a kill form junior outside hitter Katie Reeder. A kill by freshman middle blocker Sloane Morrison (Edmonds, Wash.) cut Corban's deficit to single digits, 23-14, but a pair of Warrior attack errors surrendered the set to Northwest Christian.
In set four, the Navy and Gold had to battle back from an early four-point deficit. Trailing 10-8, the Warriors exploded for an 8-0 run capped by a service ace from Hill. Leading 18-14, Corban used consecutive kills from Morrison, Hill, and sophomore setter Haley Meili (Eugene, Ore.) to take a commanding 23-14 lead. A Beacon service error brought the Navy and Gold to match point, and another blast by Hill granted Corban the victory.
Bailey led the Warrior offense with a season-high 14 kills and three errors on 37 attempts. Hill, Morrison, and Smith tallied 9, 8, and 7 kills, respectively. Corban saw a good effort from Meili, who registered her second-straight double-double with 36 assists and 17 digs. In addition, Hill and Salness recorded 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
