Carter Scores 25 as Corban Men’s Basketball Edges Pacific Union, 74-63

BOX SCORE

ANGWIN, Calif. – On the second day of its two-game road swing in California, the Corban University men's basketball team defeated Pacific Union College on Sunday evening, 74-63.  Behind 25 points from senior guard Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.), the Warriors used a strong defensive effort in both halves en route to the 11-point road victory.

The Navy and Gold fell into an early hole on Sunday, trailing 12-1 after just three minutes.  Corban then responded with 10-straight points however, capped off by a long-range effort from sophomore guard Caleb Herzberg (Beaverton, Ore.).  Not stopping there, the Warriors remained on fire, scoring the game's next eight points to finish off an 18-0 run.  During that spurt, Herzberg nailed two more three-pointers and sophomore forward Cody Crowe (Grants Pass, Ore.) added another as the Warriors built a seven-point advantage.

Closing out the half, the two sides traded buckets back and forth, but the Warriors remained in front with a four-point lead at the break.

In the second stanza, Corban junior forward Cyrus Ward (Gig Harbor, Wash.) hit a jumper in the paint early on to stretch the Warrior lead to seven points, while Carter added on a minute later to make it a 10-point Warrior advantage with 15 minutes remaining.

Over the next several minutes, Carter and freshman guard Kade Crossland (Buhl, Idaho) combined to score Corban's next 18 points, with both players penetrating and scoring from in the paint, while Crossland nailed a shot from downtown as well.

After sophomore guard Toby Roth (Silverton, Ore.) converted on a pair of free-throw opportunities and Herzberg came through from long range again with five minutes remaining, Corban led by 19 points, leaving no room for Pacific Union to mount any sort of a comeback.

On the evening, Carter's 25 points led the team on a 9-for-17 shooting effort, while also grabbing seven boards and five assists.  The 25 points marked a season-high for Carter.  Herzberg ended up with 14 points while nailing a quartet of three-pointers on the evening, while Crowe and Crossland both also finished in double figures with 10 points apiece.

As a team, Corban shot 42.1% from the field and 64.3% from the charity stripe.  Defensively, the Warriors held Pacific Union to just a 37.7% shooting effort on the night and a 22.2% mark from beyond the arc.

Corban (2-1) returns to the hardwood on Friday evening when it takes on Multnomah University.  Tipoff in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
