BOX SCORE REDDING, Calif. - Despite nailing 10 three-pointers, the Corban University men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Simpson University, 82-79, on Saturday afternoon in Redding, Calif. The back-and-forth affair saw 16 ties and 23 lead changes.
"We played hard but did not shoot it like we can," commented head coach Steve Masten. "We got the shots we wanted under their pressure, but we couldn't knock them down."
After the two teams went into the locker room deadlocked at 41 apiece, Simpson used a blistering shooting effort in the second frame to keep the Navy and Gold at bay. The Redhawks shot 48.1 percent (13-for-27) in the second half, including five-for-10 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Warriors only managed to shoot 36.7% (11-for-30) from the floor in the final 20 minutes of action.
The Warriors (1-1) were led by junior forward Cyrus Ward (Gig Harbor, Wash.), as he scored a game-high 23 points on seven-for-14 shooting and a perfect nine-for-nine from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Caleb Herzberg (Beaverton, Ore.) notched 20 points on the afternoon and drained five three-pointers. In addition, senior guard Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.) and freshman guard Kade Crossland (Buhl, Idaho) netted 14 and 12 points, respectively. All of Crossland's points came from beyond the arc.
Led by senior forward Anthony William's 18 points, Simpson received double-figure scoring efforts from four different players. Senior guard Dalton Thacker shot four-for-seven from three-point range en route to scoring 16 points. Junior guard Marc Kirkland and senior guard Shaquille Jones added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
As a team, the Navy and Gold shot 35.9% (23-for-64) from the field compared to a 48.3% (29-for-60) clip by the Redhawks. Simpson outrebounded Corban, 36-33, and the Redhawks finished with eight blocks in the game.
The Warriors return to the court on Sunday against Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif. at 7:30 p.m.
