Corban Volleyball Falls to No. 11 Eastern Oregon in Straight Sets

SALEM, Ore. - In its final match of the 2014 campaign, the Corban University volleyball team fell in straight sets (26-24, 25-20, 25-17) to No.11 Eastern Oregon on Senior Night at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center, and the Mountaineers notched their 18th three-set victory of the season.

Eastern Oregon opened the first stanza on a 7-3 run capped by a kill by sophomore outside hitter Kasaundra Tuma. The Warriors, however, fought back and stayed within striking distance for the remainder of the set. A kill by freshman outside hitter Shantelle Hill (Pasco, Wash.) cut the deficit to one (9-8), but the Mountaineers responded with a 12-8 burst to push their lead back to five (21-16).

Trailing 23-19 in the first set, senior outside hitter Miah Smith (Albany, Ore.) swung in for a kill, and Eastern Oregon committed a trio of attack errors resulting into a 23-23 tie between the two Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) teams. However, at set point (25-24) for the Mountaineers, freshman outside hitter Amanda Miller attacked for a kill to grant Eastern Oregon the first frame.

Set two saw seven ties and three lead changes, as Corban (7-19, 3-15 CCC)kept pace with Eastern Oregon (26-3, 16-2 CCC) until the final nine points of the stanza. The Warriors achieved their largest lead of the match after junior defensive specialist Piper Cantrell committed an attack error to put Corban ahead, 5-3. After Eastern Oregon regained the advantage (16-14), the Navy and Gold utilized a quick 3-0 burst to retake the lead following a service ace by sophomore setter Haley Meili (Eugene, Ore.). With the set tied at 18 apiece, the Mountaineers closed the stanza on a 7-2 run to escape to a two-set lead.

Following the second set, Corban honored its four seniors - Smith, defensive specialist Karisa Legg (Murrieta, Calif.), outside hitter Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.), and libero Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.). The crowd of 209 also gave a standing ovation to Head Coach Tracy Smith, as she coached the final match of her career at Corban.

In the third set, Eastern Oregon put Corban on its heels after racing to a 4-0 advantage. Smith, however, wouldn't let the Warriors go down without a fight, as she attacked for three kills in the midst of a 6-2 run to tie the stanza at six apiece. But the Navy and Gold couldn't quite get over the hump, as Eastern Oregon, the top team in the CCC for kills per set, attacked for 19 kills in the stanza en route to a three-set victory.

The Warriors were led by Smith, as she finished with 13 kills in the final match of her Corban career. Hill and Bailey attacked for seven kills apiece, while Meili notched a double-double with 26 assists and 13 digs. In addition, Salness collected 14 digs and three assists for the Navy and Gold.

Three players recorded double-figure kills for the Mountaineers, as Miller directed Eastern Oregon's offense with 15 kills. Moreover, sophomore setter Rachelle Chamberlain tallied a double-double with 41 assists and 11 digs.

As a team, Corban attacked for 32 kills and a 0.207 hitting percentage, while Eastern Oregon swung in for 56 kills and a 0.238 hitting percentage.
