SALEM, Ore. – In spite of a team-high 14 points and four assists by sophomore
Jade Lowery and another double-digit showing by sophomore
Julia Young with 11 points, Corban's women's basketball team could not quite catch the NAIA's No. 20-ranked Oregon Tech, 55-45, Saturday inside C.E Jeffers Sports Center.
Corban (11-4, 6-7 CCC) also got some help from junior Tara Vanweerdheuizen, who put up nine points and also had a game-high four blocked shots during the course of the night. Freshman
Sadie Pilgeram put up a good fight and was able to snatch a team-high 10 rebounds.
Oregon Tech (21-4, 9-4 CCC) had four players score in the double-digits that included Kassi Conditt with the game-high 19 points. Conditt also recorded a game-high 12 rebounds, while Karissa Dixon handed out a game-high seven assist.
The first half started off rough, as the Owls slowly tallied up points. A much awaited three-point shot came from Lowery at the 8:23 mark to pull the Warriors within two points (14-12). The score was 29-21 at the end of the half following a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Lowery.
The Warriors took off flying at the start of the second half, as a layup by Young and another by Pilgeram followed by a second three-point basket by Lowery put the Warrior at a good pace only minutes into the half. Multiple times throughout the night the Warriors came to within one point of the Owls that included a score of 43-42 at the 7:18 mark on a free throw by Young. Unfortunately, the Warriors were not able to take over the Owls' lead, as Oregon Tech stepped up its defensive pressure and used a game-ending 12-3 run to earn its 21st victory of the year.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 18-for-51 (35.3%) from the field that included 4-for-15 (26.7%) from beyond the three-point line and 5-for-11 (45.5%) at the free-throw line. Oregon Tech made a combined 23-for-62 (37.1%) shots from the field, which included 4-for-15 (26.7%) from the three-point line and 5-for-14 (35.7%) from the free-point line.
Corban returns to action on Friday, February 7th, against conference rival Concordia beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside Cavalier Gymnasium in Portland.
