Last Second Shot Lifts Concordia over Corban, 64-62

PORTLAND, Ore – Senior guard Kelly Huey scored with 1.4 seconds remaining to lift Concordia University to a 64-62 victory over Corban University in a Cascade Collegiate Conference thriller.

The last-second bucket spoiled a 27-point, 13-rebound performance by Corban junior Tara Vanweerdhuizen.  A three-pointer by Jade Lowery with 13 seconds left pulled the visitors into a tie, 62-62, after trailing for the entire contest.

Huey paced the Cavaliers (7-18, 4-9 CCC), winners of three straight, with 18 points and five assists.  Caitlyn McCutcheon added 13 points and 12 rebounds for Concordia.

The Warriors (11-15, 6-8 CCC) dropped their seventh in a row.  Payton Wilcox joined Vanweerdhuizen with a double-double contributing 13 points, on 6-of-8 shooting, and 11 rebounds.  Lowery tallied 14 points, making 6-of-9 from the field.  Vanweerdhuizen and Sadie Pilgeram had a team-high three assists.

Vanweerdhuizen was 13-for-28 from the floor as Corban shot 38 percent (28-74) for the game.  Concordia delivered 42 percent (24-57) from the field and made 13-of-17 from the line.  The Warriors got to the line just eight times, making four.  Corban held a 45-36 rebound advantage.

Concordia scored the first eight points of the game and led by 11 before Corban used a 9-0 run to trim the deficit to two, 16-14.  The Cavaliers went to intermission leading, 31-26.  The Warriors cut the gap to one-point twice in the final two minutes before Lowery's trey knotted the score.

"We struggled getting out of the gate, but demonstrated the no-die attitude we've had all year," said head coach Dave Bale.  "Tara (Vanweerdhuizen) came on strong along with Jade (Lowery).  A bright spot was Payton (Wilcox) using her athleticism to contribute nine offensive rebounds."

Corban hosts conference frontrunner No. 20-ranked Eastern Oregon University in its next encounter on Friday.  Tip-off is at 5:30 pm in C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
