Beacons Shoot Lights Out to Beat Corban

BOX SCORE SALEM – Hannah Frederick led four Northwest Christian players in double figures with 20 points Saturday night to lead the visiting Beacons to an 83-64 Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory over the Corban Warriors in C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

Northwest Christian wraps up its season with a 9-18 overall record, including a 5-13 mark in the conference. Corban is now 13-17 overall and finishes 8-10 in the CCC. The Warriors finished seventh in the conference standings and will advance to CCC postseason play next week.

Julia Young scored Corban's first seven points, capped by a three-point basket 2:16 into the game, to put her team on top 7-5. NCU responded with six unanswered points on baskets by Andrea Gloss, Sami Pitts and Tami Brown to grab an 11-7 advantage with 16 minutes left in the half, and the Beacons never again trailed. They led by as many as 13 points in the opening period before settling for a 41-31 halftime advantage. NCU was 17-for-34 from the field in the first half.

The Warriors, playing without injured all-conference center Tara Vanweerdhuizen, trailed 47-31 early in the second half before Julia Young and Jade Lowery led a 11-2 scoring run that closed the deficit to seven points at 49-42 with 15:25 on the clock. Young scored six points and Lowery added five, including a three-point field goal, during the surge.
That was as close as it got, however, as Northwest Christian pulled away to take the 19-point victory.

The Beacons shot 53 percent (30-for-57) from the field and 74 percent (20-for-27) from the foul line. In addition to her 20 points, Frederick added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Chandler Gabrio and Melyssa Weber came off the bench to score 15 and 10 points, respectively, and Pitts added 11 points. Gabrio and Brown each grabbed seven rebounds to lead NCU in that category.

Young and Lowery both scored 17 points and were the only Corban players in double figures. Lowery led her team with eight rebounds. The Warriors shot 33 percent (21-for-63) from the floor and 80 percent (16-for-20) from the foul line.

Corban forward Alison Evans was honored following the game on Senior Night.
