KLAMATH FALLS – Corban put up a valiant effort against No. 21-ranked Oregon Tech on Tuesday night but it wasn't enough as the Warriors fell to the Lady Owls, 72-58, in an opening round game of the Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball tournament at Danny Miles Court.
With the loss, the Warriors finish the 2013-14 season with a 13-18 record. Oregon Tech, the tournament's No. 2 seed, improves to 26-5 overall and will host No. 3 seed College of Idaho in a conference tournament semifinal game on Friday night.
A pair of 10-point Oregon Tech runs, one in each half, proved to be the difference in this game.
Oregon Tech scored the game's first five points before Tara Vanweerdhuizen hit a jumper in the key to put the Warriors on the board nearly three minutes into the game. The Lady Owls then reeled off 10 straight points, holding Corban scoreless for 6:40, to take a 15-2 lead.
Jade Lowery broke the streak with a jumper at the 10:58 mark, and that seemed to jump start the Warriors, who at one point closed to within four points before scoring the final five points to trail 25-20 at the half.
Lowery hit a three-point shot 25 seconds into the second period to pull Corban to within a basket, and two minutes later Vanweerdhuizen's field goal kept the Warriors' deficit at two points, 27-25.
That's when Oregon Tech put together its second 10-point run, this time over five minutes, to take a 37-25 edge. The Lady Owls never led by less than double digits the remainder of the contest.
Lowery led Corban with 16 points, and
Julia Young scored all 15 of her points in the second half. Vanweerdhuizen, who missed the team's previous game because of a sore knee, nearly had a triple-double for the Warriors. She finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots in 33 minutes.
A highlight for the Warriors came in the final minute when
Alison Evans, the team's lone senior, made a steal and scored the team's final two points on a layup with 33 seconds remaining.
The Warriors shot 39 percent (22-for-56) from the field but just 26 percent (5-for-19) from three-point range. They did, however, own a 38-34 edge in rebounds.
Kassi Conditt led Oregon Tech with 22 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Karly Leveque and Rebekah Matten added 11 points and Tess Armstrong finished with 10. The Lady Owls shot 43 percent (27-for-62) from the field, including an impressive 58 percent (7-for-12) from long range.
