BOX SCORE CALDWELL, Idaho - Despite keeping each set close early on, the Corban University volleyball team couldn't keep pace with College of Idaho's serving game, as the Warriors committed 10 receiving errors and dropped its ninth-straight match, falling in three sets (25-19, 25-8, 25-16).
The first frame opened with a back-and-forth battle, including five ties, between the two Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) teams. With the set knotted at five apiece, two College of Idaho errors and a kill by senior outside hitter Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) granted Corban its largest lead of the match. After the Lady Yotes regained the lead, 9-8, Bailey swung in for another kill to re-tie the set. However, the Warriors went on to commit six errors on the next 15 plays to fall behind, 21-12. At set point, College of Idaho sophomore outside hitter Katy Robinson attacked for a kill to end the set.
The second stanza saw the Warriors (3-10, 0-6 CCC) stay afloat early on, as Bailey connected with sophomore setter Mikenzee Frazier (Lebanon, Ore.) who swooped in for a kill to tie the set at five. But that's as close as the frame would get, as College of Idaho (7-7, 4-1 CCC) erupted for a 20-3 run to dominate the set. The Lady Yotes rally included six service aces.
Set three nearly mirrored the first, as Corban opened up strong with a 4-1 lead capped off by a kill by freshman outside hitter Shantelle Hill (Pasco, Wash.). However, College of Idaho continued to exhibit a strong serving game, using four aces in the midst of a 13-5 run to scurry away with the set. A kill by College of Idaho freshman middle blocker Kelsey Kramer brought set point, and a Corban attack error ended the match.
Corban attacked for a 0.011 percentage compared to a 0.274 clip by College of Idaho. The Warriors compiled just 23 kills in the match, while the Lady Yotes swung for 39 kills.
The Warrior offense was led by Bailey, who connected on eight kills with four errors on 26 swings. Hill and senior opposite hitter Miah Smith (Lebanon, Ore.) chipped in five and four kills, respectively. Frazier paced Corban's passing game with 11 assists, while freshman defensive specialist Kasey Calderon led the back row with 12 digs.
Robinson led College of Idaho with 12 kills. In addition, junior setter Sierra Porter tied a season-high with four service aces.
Corban will return home for a three-match home-stand, as the Warriors take on Northwest University (Wash.) on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
