BOX SCORE KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Despite a valiant effort, the Corban University volleyball team came up short in straight sets to Oregon Tech (25-12, 25-19, 25-21) at Danny Miles Court on Friday night. In the defeat, the Warriors compiled 28 kills and attacked for a .052 hitting percentage.
In the first set, 10 attack errors plagued Corban (3-6, 0-2 CCC), who registered just three kills in the set. A pair of Oregon Tech (10-2, 1-0) errors granted the Warriors their only lead of the set (4-3), but the Owls responded with a 10-3 run to take control. A kill by senior opposite hitter Miah Smith (Albany, Ore.) brought Corban to within six (10-16), but Oregon Tech would go on to take the set, 25-12.
The second stanza saw Corban's best offensive efficiency, as the Warriors recorded 12 kills and hit a .267 attack percentage. Trailing 6-8, the Warriors exploded for a 6-0 run capped off by kills by freshman outside hitter Shantelle Hill (Pasco, Wash.) and freshman opposite hitter Shelby Miller (Lebanon, Ore.), as well as a service ace by freshman defensive specialist Kasey Calderon (Murrieta, Calif.). After the Owls cut Corban's lead to two (13-11), kills by Miller and Hill gave the Warriors a little more breathing room. But the lead wouldn't last long, as Oregon Tech closed the set on a 14-6 run to win, 25-19.
In set three, the Warriors managed to fight back from a 5-11 deficit. A kill by freshman middle blocker Sloane Morrison (Edmonds, Wash.), followed by a pair of Owl attack errors and a service ace by sophomore setter Haley Meili (Eugene, Ore.) brought Corban to within two (9-11). Trailing by three (16-19), the Warriors managed to rally three straight points to tie the set with kills by Morrison and senior outside hitter Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.). But the Owls responded again, this time scoring five-straight points to put Corban away.
The Navy and Gold displayed one of its more aggressive outings, as Corban compiled 97 attack attempts. The Warriors also registered 37 digs, 27 assists, and eight block assists.
Hill and Morrison led the offensive attack with six kills apiece, while Smith chipped in five kills. As for the passing game, Meili led the Warriors with 25 assists.
Defensively, Corban was led by senior libero Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.) and Smith who tallied eight and six digs, respectively. Moreover, Hill tied a season- and career-high with three block assists in the match.
The Warriors return to the hardwood on Sept. 12 for their home-opener against Warner Pacific College at 7 p.m.
