Warrior Women’s Basketball Gains Experience against Pac-12 Opponent OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team traveled south on Sunday to take on NCAA Division I and Pac-12 opponent, Oregon State University, and while gaining experience against the No. 9-ranked team in the NCAA, the Warriors dropped the exhibition contest, 98-48.

"We played hard and it was a gutsy performance for seven players to take on the No. 9-ranked OSU Beavers," said Corban head coach Dave Bale. "Our first-quarter output was encouraging with 18 points to their 29, and Julia had a really good shooting night going 5-for-11 from three and hitting all of her free-throw attempts."

In the non-counting exhibition game, the Warriors kept it close in the first quarter and actually held a lead against the Beavers when senior guard Jade Lowery (Oregon City, Ore.) nailed her first shot of the game. By the end of the first stanza, Corban trailed just 29-18, but then the Beavers showed why they are so highly regarded in the NCAA Division I ranks, outscoring Corban 22-4 in the second quarter en route to securing the comfortable victory on the evening.

"The ladies knew we were going to have a very difficult time stopping their inside game with 6-6 and 6-5 girls to guard, but we battled the whole 40 minutes," said Bale. "With all the pressure the Beavers put on us, we only had 17 turnovers which is also a real positive."

Leading the way on the evening for Corban was senior guard Julia Young (Snohomish, Wash.), as she scored 21 points on the evening to go along with two boards and two steals. Additionally, Lowery added 13 points for Corban, while junior forward Sadie Pilgeram (Helena, Mont.) scored nine points for the Navy and Gold.

Corban (1-0) returns to action this weekend when it travels to Idaho for the Lewis-Clark State Tournament. The Warriors will take on Lewis-Clark State on Friday at 5 p.m. and then University of Montana-western on Saturday at 1 p.m.
