Warrior Women’s Basketball Powers Past Wolves on New Year’s Eve, 80-40

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team showed consistency on New Year's Eve, averaging 20 points a quarter while locking down defensively en route to a commanding 80-40 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) triumph over Walla Walla University. For Corban, the 40-point margin of victory was its largest of the season.

The Warriors jumped out early to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, taking a 42-18 lead into the halftime break before then pouring it on in the second half with big third and fourth stanzas on the way to the 40-point triumph.

A key to the game was Corban's defense, as it forced Walla Walla into 22 turnovers, leading to 32 points-off-turnovers for the Warriors. Corban also took advantage of its depth, utilizing every available player while getting 32 points from players off the bench as opposed to just five for the Wolves. Moreover, Corban dominated on the boards, 61-36, and took advantage of its speed and size advantage, scoring 46 points in the paint to just 16 for Walla Walla.

Warrior junior forward Sadie Pilgeram (Helena, Mont.) led the way for the Navy and Gold with a 15 points and 10 rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, notching her fourth double-double of the 2015-16 campaign. It should be noted that she was not too far off of a triple-double as she also recorded five assists to go with three steals and one block.

Senior guard Jade Lowery (Oregon City, Ore.) tacked on 13 points for the Warriors, while freshman guard Lindsay Asplund (Battle Ground, Wash.) scored 10 points for Corban on 4-of-8 shooting.

As a team, Corban shot 43.2% from the floor and made five three-pointers on the night. Walla Walla (0-11, 0-6 CCC), conversely, shot just 25.0% from the field with only a trio of long-range efforts.

"The ladies ran their patterns well and had good looks at the hoop," said Corban head coach Dave Bale. "We know what it is like playing short-handed, so we wanted to keep the pace up to wear them down. It was good to have everyone get some time on the floor."

Corban (6-8, 2-4 CCC) kicks off the 2016 portion of the campaign on Saturday, January 2, when it hosts New Hope Christian College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
