Owen's Big Night for Warrior Women's Basketball not enough in loss to No. 15 SOU

ASHLAND, Ore. - The Corban University women's basketball team opened up Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play on Saturday evening against the No. 15 Southern Oregon University Raiders, and despite some solid individual performances, the Warriors came up short against the Raiders, 112-66.

"The ladies had a good first quarter, but then the depth of the Raiders took over," said head coach Dave Bale. "Payton had a productive scoring night, as did Annie. We handled their initial pres, but the missed open shots led to SOU transition baskets. They showed why they are a top-25 team."

Despite falling behind early, the Warriors cut the deficit to just seven points by the end of the first quarter at 27-20. A huge second quarter, however, put the home side up big at halftime, 63-35. During the first 20 minutes of play, junior guard Annie Owen (Corvallis, Ore.) led the way with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting with one three-pointer. For Owen, it was her best performance of her Warrior career.

In the third stanza, Owen remained hot from the field, nailing a couple more shots, including a three-pointer. Unfortunately for Corban, SOU (7-0, 1-0 CCC) remained efficient all over the floor, taking a 93-51 advantage to the fourth quarter.

From that point on, it was too large a deficit to come back from, as Corban ultimately went on to fall to the Raiders by 46 points.

On the night in just 22 minutes, Owen finished with a team-best 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting with seven rebounds, two assists, and one block, capping her career-best night. In addition, junior forward Payton Wilcox (Salem, Ore.) recorded 16 points to go with three boards and two steals.

As a team, Corban shot just 35.3% from the field, while Southern Oregon made 54.8% overall, nailing 15 three-pointers in the process while shooting 53.6% from deep. The rebounding battle also went to SOU, 46-37.

Corban (4-5, 0-1 CCC) continues its first conference road trip of the year tomorrow in Klamath Falls against Oregon Tech. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
