CCC Tournament Quarterfinal Preview: Warrior Men’s Basketball Primed for Postseason

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team's sole victory over a ranked opponent this season came on Feb. 7, as the Navy and Gold knocked off No. 16 Warner Pacific College, 75-57. Corban will have that same opportunity against Warner Pacific on Wednesday night, but this time, the stakes will be higher, as the sixth-seeded Warriors will battle the third-seeded Knights in the Quarterfinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament.

Corban comes into the contest with a 15-12 record, including an 8-10 effort in CCC play. However, the Warriors have won six of their last nine games and are shooting nearly 49% as a team in the month of February.

Junior forward Cyrus Ward (Gig Harbor, Wash.) leads the Warriors in both scoring and rebounding with 15.6 points and nine boards per contest. He is one of only four players in the CCC who averages over 15 points and six rebounds per game.

Senior guard Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.) tallies 14.5 points per outing and has drilled 38 jumpers from beyond the arc this season. Carter played a major role in Corban's upset over the Knights earlier this month, as he registered 19 points and drilled four three-pointers in the triumph. Freshman guard AJ Monterossi (Beaverton, Ore.) is the top-scoring freshman in the CCC, as he averages 10.6 points and 4.3 assists per game.

On the other end of the hardwood, No. 16 Warner Pacific enters the game at 24-6 overall with a 14-4 mark in CCC action. The Knights are currently riding a four-game winning streak, and they are hosting a first-round CCC Tournament affair for the ninth-straight year.

Senior forward Doug Thomas leads the Knights in scoring with 16.1 points per game, while junior guard Earl Jones is second on the team in scoring with 15.9 points per contest. Defense has played a major role in Warner Pacific's success this season, as the Knights are first in the CCC in field goal percentage defense (38.4%).
