Warrior Women's Soccer Shutout by Menlo in 2-0 Defeat

ATHERTON, Calif. - Despite outshooting Menlo College on the road, the Corban University women's soccer team fell victim to a pair of first-half goals from the Oaks on Friday in a 2-0 loss. Friday's match marked the first time the Warriors failed to find the back of the net in 2015, while it also was the second-straight loss to Menlo after losing 1-0 in 2014.

"We didn't come out to play today," said head coach Marty Ziesemer. "We seemed to be a step behind the game at least for the first half. Second half we had a bit more hunger, but just couldn't get many opportunities to make it a game."

In the first stanza, the Oaks took advantage of getting fouled in the box and earned a penalty kick. Jelissa Blanco did not miss her spot, putting her shot into the back of the net in the 32nd minute. Menlo then doubled its lead in the 44th minute just before the half when Sheyenne Frias scored for the Oaks.

During the first 45 minutes, Corban was outshot, 6-5, but all five of the Warriors' shots did go on frame, forcing the Oaks' goalkeeper into five saves.

In the second stanza, the Navy and Gold registered six shots to just two for the Oaks, but the Warriors were unable to put anything on the board, resulting in the two-goal defeat.

Off the bench, it was freshman forward Emma Kosmala (Lebanon, Ore.) who racked up a team-high three shots, while senior midfielder Ashley Beykovsky (Gladstone, Ore.) and sophomore forward Marissa Telarroja (Claremont, Calif.) both tallied two shots.

The Warriors (2-2) return to action on Sunday when they take on the University of California-Merced at 12 p.m. Be sure to follow the action on Sunday via UC Merced's live stats.
