LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Corban University men's basketball team once again ran into a buzz saw when facing off against the Eastern Oregon University on Saturday night, ultimately falling by 31 points (85-54) in a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) matchup.
"We were overmatched tonight," said Corban head men's basketball coach Steve Masten. "We need to limit their possessions by using the shot clock and executing our offense. We did a pretty good job of that in the first half, but didn't in the second half. The game got away from us as a result."
Corban kept it close early, but a late run to close the half for the Mountaineers pushed the advantage to 10 points, and then it was all Eastern Oregon in the second stanza. The Mountaineers pushed in front early in the second half and never looked back, scoring 48 points en route to winning by 31 points on the night.
EOU (12-11, 7-6 CCC) led by as many as 33 points on the evening and dished out 23 assists in the win. Case Rada finished with a game-high 21 points for the Mountaineers, making eight of 12 shots on the evening.
Corban shot just 34.8% on the night and only 5.6% from beyond the arc, making just one three-pointer.
Senior forward Cyrus Ward (Gig Harbor, Wash.) scored 19 points and grabbed eight boards in the defeat, while sophomore guard AJ Monterossi (Beaverton, Ore.) totaled 19 points and four rebounds in the loss. Freshman forward Joel Johnson (Tigard, Ore.) chipped in another productive performance with 12 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor.
Besides those three players, only freshman guard Preston White (Covington, Wash.) made a field goal on the evening for the Warriors, as he went 1-for-2 from the field with two points.
Corban (11-9, 5-7 CCC) gets back on the court on Tuesday night when it travels to Northwest Christian University for another CCC contest. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
